Shreveport, LA - Willard Wesley Philyaw age 89, passed away on January 5, 2020 in Shreveport, Louisiana at his home peacefully surrounded by his lovely wife and granddaughter Candace at his side. Mr. Philyaw was born to John Wesley and Ophelia Bickham Philyaw on February 14, 1930 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He joined the United States Army and served from 1950-1953. He was ranked Sargant and was stationed at 604th Trans (Amph Trk) Fort Story, Virginia and Fort Eustis Virginia. He was a Paratrooper in the Korean War and earned the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, one overseas bar, National Defense Service Medal and The Louisiana Veterans Medal presented by Governor Bobby Jindal and was recommended for the Bronze Star. He also worked as a police officer at the Shreveport Police Department. He also was employed at Beaird Poulan, Vincent Guard, and Schumpert Medical Center as a Security Officer and Security Officer at Grace Home. Mr. Philyaw was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Margie Philyaw, Elsie Philyaw, JoAnn Johniken, Jeanette Addison, AJ Philyaw, Artis Philyaw, and William Philyaw. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bettie Jean Daley Philyaw; sons, Allan Philyaw and wife Sandy, Terry Philyaw and wife Libby; grandchildren, Christina Dodd and Husband Peyton Dodd and Candace Philyaw, Jay and Marshall Philyaw; great grandchildren, Gracie and Aubree Dodd. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at the Rose-Neath Southside Chapel, 2500 Southside Drive, Shreveport, LA. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at Rose-Neath Southside Chapel. Brother Troy Phillips will be officiating the service. Graveside services will follow at Summer Grove Cemetery, Mansfield Road and W Bert Kouns Industrial Loop beside Walgreens. Honoring Mr. Philyaw as pallbearers will be Bobby Ainsworth, Tiger Upchurch, Bobby Pouncy , Peyton Dodd, Jay Philyaw and Marshall Philyaw. Honorary pallbearers will be Christus Schumpert Security Department. The family would like to thank Willis Knighton Home Health and Hospice. Memorials be made to the United States Wounded Warrior Project.
