Funeral services for Walter Edward Dement, 69, will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2021 at Kingston Baptist Church, 7407 Highway 175, Frierson, Louisiana 71027. Burial will follow immediately at Evergreen Cemetery, Highway 175, Frierson, Louisiana. Officiating will be Walter's very close friend, Dr. Randy Harper. Visitation will be held 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2201 Airline Drive, Bossier City, Louisiana 71111. Walter was born on July 20, 1952 in Shreveport, Louisiana to George and Sunshine Dement. He passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2021 in Vivian, Louisiana. Walter lived his eighth grade through tenth grade years at the farm of his popaw Steve and grandma Avis Norris in Frierson, Louisiana. After leaving the farm he was involved in the Sports for Boys Club which started his love for the sport of boxing. This was under the direction of Coach Irish McNeel whom he admired greatly. Walter's father, George Dement, was the president of this club. Walter was a graduate of Bossier High School, class of 1971. Following his graduation Walter decided to serve his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. During this time his main job was coaching the airmen in the sport of boxing. He also enjoyed this activity by participating in the boxing tournaments competing against other branches of service. He later won several State Golden Glove Championships and 16 Tough Man Contests. After being honorably discharged Walter went to work with his father at the Holiday Inn in Shreveport and Bossier City, Louisiana. He later chose to start a career with the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Department where he worked for almost 24 years. During this time he met his wife of 28 years, Beth, and after retiring they both returned to his family farm where they enjoyed fishing and spending time with their family and friends. Walter is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; sister, Ann Montes; and brother, David Dement. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Beth Dement; daughter, Angela Skillingstad and husband, Monty; adopted daughter, Alyssa Pittman; step-daughter, April Zicchino and husband, Jason; adopted son, Gabriel Pittman; step-son, Terry Pittman; brothers, Steve Dement and Tim Dement; grandchildren, Cameron Davis and wife, Haley, Cole Davis and wife, Devin, Allie Strothers, Taylor Tolliver, Joel Zicchino, Faith Zicchino and Samuel Zicchino; and great-grandchildren, Kynsie Davis, Carter Davis, Camp Davis, Avery Grace Davis, Jack Davis and Ellie Strothers; and a host of numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends. Honoring Walter as pallbearers will be Russell Bridges, Cameron Davis, Cole Davis, Captain Doug Lauter, Mike Lombardino, Jr. and Monty Skillingstad. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Retired Sheriff Larry Dean, Stevie Dement, Kenny Launius and Sheriff Julian Whittington.
