HOMER, LA: Funeral services were held for Mr. Virgil William "Bill" Herring, 67, at First Presbyterian Church of Homer, LA, on Sunday, June 23, 2019, at 3:30 P.M., with Rev. Jason Leonard, officiating. Interment followed at Arlington Cemetery in Homer, LA. The family received friends at the church from 2-3:30 P.M., prior to the service.Bill was born June 19, 1952, in Ruston, LA, to Virgil H. and Monnie D. Peterson Herring. He peacefully passed away at home on Thursday, June 20, 2019, in Homer, LA. Bill will lovingly be remembered for many things. He was very proud of his children and "grandbabies," and family and friends meant everything to him. Bill loved the outdoors-spending most of his free time on the lake, in the woods, or in his gardens. On Friday nights in the fall, you could find him right beside the press box on the 40-yard line cheering on the Homer Pelicans. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, stationed first at Ft. Bliss, TX, then Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, and lastly Ft. McPherson, in Atlanta, GA. Bill was also known for his gift of gab; he never met a stranger, and he was a friend to and "kin to" everyone. He will be dearly missed.Bill was preceded in death by his mother.He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Susan Tabor Herring; his father, Virgil H. Herring; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Ryan Beavers and Denise and Curtis Sherrill all of Homer, LA; a son and daughter-in-law, Jamey and Wendy Herring of Junction City, AR; six grandchildren, Kalei Sherrill, Haidyn Herring, Tatum Hays, Claire Hays, Reed Beavers, and Audree Beavers; three brothers, Mike Herring and wife Jo Sharon of Bernice, LA, David Herring and wife Gwen of Dubach, LA, and James "Dude" Herring of Farmerville, LA; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Pallbearers were his nephews, Michael Herring, James Anglin, Charlie Tabor, Josh Herring, David Wayne Herring, Steven Anglin, Luke Herring, Jake Tabor, and Ethan Herring.In lieu of flowers honoring Bill, his family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Homer Quarterback Club, MedCamps of Louisiana, or First Presbyterian Church of Homer. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, Brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent are praiseworthy--think about such things.
