Thelma Clarice Sawyer

A memorial service for Thelma Clarice Sawyer “Granny” , 92, will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Broadmoor Baptist Church, 4110 Youree Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana. A visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Officiating the service will be Dr. Herb Armentrout.

Thelma was born on May 9, 1934 on the 2711 block of Lakeshore Dr. and passed away September 18, 2026 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Ma grew up at the tail end of the depression and on set of WWII and was well acquainted with hard times. A 1951 graduate of Fair Park High School, she met and married Buzz Sawyer while he was stationed at Barksdale in the 50’s and moved to Oil City, Louisiana in 1966. They worked and lived side by side from then until his passing in June of 1995. Together they ran Buzz’s Auto and Truck Parts and Wrecking Yard during those years.

They together taught us four siblings the value of hard work; provided us with private education and college if we chose.

She is preceded in death by her father, Clarence Harlan Anderson; mother, Thelma “Peachy” Anderson; daughter, Vicki Lynn Sawyer Poe and husband, Angus Lee “Buzz” Sawyer. Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Valerie Lee Sawyer King; sons, Steven Michal Sawyer and David Page Boaz Sawyer and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Three days prior to her passing, she was able to reconnect and visit with her 21 year old granddaughter, Allyson Elizabeth Hutto after a 19 year absence.

The family would like to express special thanks to Gentiva Hospice Group, especially Marquita, Belenda, Connie, Pastor Scott and all the others for the care and Ma received in her final days also to her friends, Angela Hillman, Debbie Collyer and her loving friend, Mike Patterson.

We shall miss her but know she no longer suffers but is at peace, been made well and is in Heaven with loved ones who have gone ahead.
