Sudie was born on November 15, 1929 in Farmerville, Louisiana to Benjamin and Nedra Farrar and passed away Sunday, April 30, 2023 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Sudie was raised on a farm in Farmerville, Louisiana. Like most rural farms, her parents grew cotton, and she learned how to pick cotton. She graduated from high school in 10th grade then moved to Shreveport to begin work at a local bank as a runner. She was courted by A.P. DeFatta. After marriage, she began raising her family above the first wooden grocery structure built by Anthony’s parents.

After enlarging the grocery store further up Louisiana Avenue, Sudie took the job as bookkeeper and daily checkout clerk. She handled the store’s inventory and daily revenues, all while raising three sons. She continued this for over 40 years until her husband became ill and was sidelined by mini strokes. With the help of son, Philip DeFatta, A.P. DeFatta Food Market was sold and Sudie finally began and justly deserved time of retirement. From picking cotton to managing a neighborhood tradition, Sudie Dean Farrar was the force behind the grocery store on Louisiana Avenue.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, A.P. DeFatta, Sr.; son, Philip F. DeFatta; sisters, Melba Hodge and Beatrice Bacilla; brother, Waburne Farrar and sister-in-law, Katherine Cascio. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Anthony DeFatta, Jr. and wife, Tracy, Dr. Michael B. DeFatta; brothers-in-law, Philip Verderaime, Johnny Hodge; daughter-in-law, Debbie DeFatta; grandchildren, Christopher DeFatta, Melanie Stinnett, Dr. Erin Hickman, P.J. DeFatta, Elizabeth DeFatta, Michael DeFatta, Jr. and McKenzie DeFatta; great-grandchildren, Ethan Stinnett, Evan Stinnett, Trenton DeFatta, Austin DeFatta, Brodie DeFatta and Jax Ryder Hickman along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Honoring Sudie as pallbearers will  be Christopher DeFatta, Michael DeFatta, Jr., George Bacilla, Jr., P.J. DeFatta, John Cascio, Trenton DeFatta, Austin DeFatta and Louis Johnson. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Philip Verderaime.
