SHREVEPORT - Shelly L. Mendez, M.D., 36, of Bossier City, Louisiana passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2020. Shelly was born May 2, 1984 to Michael Kearney and Hope Eyster Kearney in Lafayette, Louisiana and grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Shelly married the love of her life, Sergio Mendez, in June of 2015. She had two beautiful daughters who she loved very much, Zoe Brown, in November 2009 and Rosie Mendez, in September 2016. She attended Centenary College of Louisiana for her Bachelor of Science in Biology, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. She went on to go to medical school and residency in Medicine-Pediatrics at LSUHSC-Shreveport.
Shelly was diagnosed with a brain tumor and beat it, finishing her chemotherapy in 2014. Following her courageous battle, she wrote a children's book inspired by childhood stories from her father and dedicated to her daughter, Zoe, When I Was Little, published in 2014. She wanted Zoe to have something special in case something bad ever happened to her.
Shelly was the most warm and loving woman. Her captivating smile and quick wit lightened the lives of the people who were lucky enough to have her in their life. Despite everything she went through, she remained a loving, caring, inquisitive, funny, beautiful woman who would do anything for anyone. She loved cooking, soccer, painting, taking care of her friends, and she rarely met a margarita she did not like. That being said, she loved nothing more than her partner in life, Sergio, and being a mother to her little girls, Zoe and Rosie.
Shelly is survived by her husband, Sergio Mendez; her daughters, Zoe and Rosie; her parents, Michael and Hope Kearney and brother, Brian Kearney. She also leaves behind countless friends and family whose lives she enriched. She was one of a kind, and those of us lucky enough to know her will always remember her spirit, her laughter, and her warmth. She was so loved, and she will be dearly missed.
A memorial service has been set for Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at 4:30 pm at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2201 Airline Drive, Bossier City, Louisiana.
