Sandra Shahan Nix was born to John Paul and Emma Lucille Shahan on January 2, 1943, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Sandra passed into the arms of her Lord on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, after a brief illness.
Visitation will be on Monday, May 11, 2026, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home on Airline Drive. A funeral service will be on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 2:30 p.m., at Airline Baptist Church on Airline Drive, officiated by Brother Harrell Shelton. Burial will follow at Hill Crest Cemetery in Haughton, Louisiana.
Sandra graduated from Bossier High School in 1960. She graduated from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches in 1964 with a double major in Voice and Piano. She continued her education, completing her Masters+30 by 1977. She taught 7th and 8th-grade choir at Greenacres Jr. High School from 1965 to 1991. During her teaching tenure, she taught thousands of students. So many considered her a favorite teacher and mentor. She was known for her award-winning choirs, and wonderful Christmas and end of the year programs. She was voted Greenacres Jr. High Teacher of the Year in 1984.
While teaching full-time, she was the pianist at First Baptist Church of Bossier, then served as pianist at Benton Baptist Church, where her husband, Milton, was Music Director. She was a gifted pianist and soloist. She sung in the choir and was a soloist at First Baptist Church of Bossier, then later at Airline Baptist Church in Bossier. She valued her church family at Airline Baptist very much. She had many long-time friends there that will miss her terribly.
She also performed with the theatre group Peter Pan Players. She gave her talents to many roles and then became Music Director for the later part of her involvement.
In 1991, she retired to join her husband, Milton, in running The Lazer’s Edge, LLC, The Lazer’s Edge was a successful business for 36 years, serving the Shreveport-Bossier Community with quality toner cartridges and printer service.
Sandra loved to travel with Milton, various choirs, church groups, and with her friends. More recently, at The Blake, she enjoyed any outing or activity. If the bus was leaving, she was on it.
Although Sandra was a well-loved teacher with many awards, accomplished pianist and soloist, gifted actor, and successful business owner, she would probably say her biggest accomplishment was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to spend time with them, spoiling them when she could.
Sandra was preceded in death by her loving husband, Milton Nix, her mother and father, and her sister, Debra Shahan. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Cheryl Chavarria, and husband, Ben; sons, Lance Nix and wife, Rhonda, and Brian Nix and wife, Jinkie; grandchildren, Chelsea Chavarria, Brandon Nix, Lindsey Golden, and husband, Trey, Sage Chavarria, Peyton Nix, Noah Nix, and Micah Nix; and great-grandchildren, Hunter and Grey Golden.
Honoring Sandra as pallbearers will be Lance Nix, Brian Nix, Peyton Nix, Ben Chavarria, Sage Chavarria, Trey Golden, and Frank Wilson.
Special thanks go to our Blake family (staff and residents), our church family at Airline Baptist Church (Harrell Shelton – Associate Pastor), Willis Knighton Hospice family (nurse Kay), and Ms. Gardenia and A.J. for being her loving angels.
