Longtime Shreveport resident Sallie McKenzie passed away October 25, 2016 in Longview, Texas. She was born Nov. 29, 1929 at Shreveport's North Louisiana Sanitarium as the first child of Thomas E. and Esther Horton Victory. She attended Creswell Elementary School, Byrd High School and graduated from Centenary College at age 19 years with a degree in upper elementary education. Her first teaching position was in Vivian then she returned to teach at Line Avenue School. During this period she met and married her husband, Cecil Marshall McKenzie. They were happily married for 61 years before his death in 2013.
Her career in education was broad. After teaching in Caddo parish for a number of years she and her family relocated to Hammond, LA where she taught middle school mathematics for 10 years. During this time she also completed her Master's Degree in Education at Southeastern Louisiana University. Moving back to Shreveport, she became a counselor at Atkins Elementary School and later Assistant Principal for Curriculum at Turner Middle School before retiring with thirty four years of work in the education field.
Even in retirement Sallie helped others and stayed busy working with patients who had traumatic brain injuries to try to restore cognitive function, volunteering at Schumpert hospital, joining her wonderful group of friends in many activities. She was devoted to her church and sang in the choir. She was a loyal wife, mother and friend and she certainly was an exemplary and much loved mother-in-law and grandmother.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Victory. She is survived by her son and wife, Dr. John Marshall McKenzie (Mary) of Gilmer, TX; son, David Thomas McKenzie (former wife, Shelly) of Keller, TX; beloved grandchildren, John Marshall McKenzie, wife Jade and great-grandson, Marshall, of The Colony, TX, Elizabeth Ann McKenzie of Washington, DC, Paige Leigh McKenzie of Austin, TX and Patrick Thomas McKenzie of Stillwater, OK; also brother, Jeffrey P. Victory (Nancy) of Shreveport, LA; sisters, Sharon McGowan (Larry) of Houston, TX, Jennifer Victory of Shreveport, LA, twin sisters, Ellen Bell (Joe) and Frances Schenkkan (Pete) both of Austin, TX; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
