Rufus Guidry

Rufus Guidry Rufus Guidry passed on from this life on Monday, October 18, 2021. He was born on December 6, 1941, in Rayne, Louisiana and was the 9th child in a family of 11. He always said his parents named him Rufus because they ran out of names with so many kids. Having lived a life of little means growing up he joined the United States Air Force looking for stability. He went on to honorably serve 20 years and retired as a Master Sergeant. After his retirement, he would work another 20 years serving and supporting the military and veterans. He always downplayed his 40 years of service to the government as just something that was expected of him. He was married to his wife of 54 years Merlyne. While it was not a fairytale marriage it was true love, and they weathered many storms together. Rufus could not stand to be without his beloved and passed away 16 days after her death. But Rufus was more than just those things. He was my Dad and I looked up to him. He was always available to talk or offer advice if it was needed. He was strong and gentle at the same time and every boy I ever brought home said they were just a tiny bit afraid of him. He loved watching football and his team Pittsburgh Steelers even won in the last game he would ever watch. His hobby really was his tv, watching sports and his recliner. My Dad was smart, funny, witty and a great Dad. He loved all his children and grandchildren. He never got off the phone with you without saying he loved you. Earning his pride was my greatest joy. There are not enough words to describe him because he really was one of a kind. My Dad lived with the knowledge he was dying for 18 months and yet he got up every day with a joy for life and a simple thankfulness to just have another day with his family. I hope I can be like my Dad. Rest now; you have done good. Love always, Melanie
