After being drafted during the Vietnam War, Roger traveled the world as he continued to serve his country in the United States Coast Guard, until retiring honorably as an officer. Following his retirement, Roger filled the role of Operations Manager for Cameron Crew Boats in Cameron, LA.
Roger loved his family and spending time on the water fishing. He dreamed of living on a lake one day. His dream came true in the late 80's. He and his late wife, Marilyn Henke, moved to beautiful Toledo Bend Reservoir. Quickly, they established themselves as fun-loving and dedicated friends to all of their neighbors. Roger's residence has become a local landmark, "The Last Cast." He is lovingly known as "Pop," "Pop Rog," and "The Mayor."
He is preceded in death by his late wife, Marilyn Henke, who passed away December 10, 2009. Roger is survived by his son, Roger Henke Jr, and wife, Jessica Ortego Henke of Lafayette, LA; his daughter, Patricia Henke of Boulder, CO and his partner, Jane Danapas of Many, LA; Roger has three grandchildren that he loved dearly and spoke of often; his granddaughter, Riley Henke and his grandsons, Avery Henke and Emry Gates. They call him "Pop."
Roger often hosted LSU football game parties with his friends. He loved spending time with his partner, Jane. Roger was quick to share fishing reports and local news; he also loved his family. He was especially proud of his grandchildren. Roger was a happy man that lived a fulfilling life. Whenever he was asked how he was doing, his common response was, "Today is the best day of my life." He lived a life and left a legacy to be proud of. Roger will be missed, but fondly remembered.
