Rickey Eugene VanHuss passed away peacefully on Monday, August 4, 2025, in Bossier City, Louisiana, at the age of 68. Preceded in death by his parents, Paul & Geraldine (Wise) VanHuss; son, Benjamin VanHuss, and nephew, Johnny Spicer.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth VanHuss; sister, Darlene Oiler; brother, Dwane Grimes (Lisa); his daughters, Angela VanHuss (Tommy Cook) and Kimberly Bostic (Rick), Lisa Morrison (Toby), Pam Masau (Morgan), Troy Rein (Lorraine), and Trish Monnin (Todd). He was a beloved grandfather to Beau, Brody, Logan, William, Jake, Nick, Lincoln, Katie & Emily. He also had many beloved nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.
He was born in Dayton, Ohio, on May 16, 1957. He loved with all his heart. Rick was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back. He was always helping out a friend or neighbor because he could. He was a true jack of all trades. His Halloween parties were legendary and always had way too much candy. His beautiful blue eyes always sparkled… sometimes with joy and sometimes with mischief.
Rick enjoyed his career at General Motors. He worked there for 37 years and made some great friends.
He was an avid fisherman. He loved the challenge of waking early and fishing the perfect hole with some good buddies from GM. He was a master at catching the limit of white perch; however, he was never a fan of cleaning them. His freezer was always full of fish, and he was ready to have a fish fry at the drop of a hat, and always willing to share.
Rick was known for his smoked brisket, ribs, and BBQ delicacies. If you were lucky enough to enjoy some of his brisket for lunch, you always left full and with some food for later. Although he was born in Ohio, no one could ever tell that he wasn’t a true Cajun cook. He made an excellent gumbo, and his crawfish boils were second to none. He was an excellent cook and was always up to discuss “what’s for dinner?”
The only thing he couldn’t cook was “small.” He loved to cook huge batches and shared with eager friends, family, and neighbors. He even invested in rotating stocks of Tupperware so he would always be ready to send food home with his guests.
Rick impressed his friends and family with his dedication to walking daily. He and his wife, Betsy, planned their day around their daily walks at the park. He was a regular and soon made friends with the other walkers. They would meet up at the park, come rain or shine, in 100 degrees or 10 degrees. Most days consisted of a leisurely 5-mile walk. When asked how he stayed so consistent, he always replied, “You just gotta get it done!”
Rick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be dearly missed.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all those who offered prayers and support during the past few weeks, especially the nurses and staff at Willis Knighton Bossier.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 11:00 am with a memorial service following at 12:00 pm at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2201 Airline Dr., Bossier City, Louisiana. Burial will be private at a later date. Officiating the service will be Pastor John Haigler.
