Richard Edmond Chaney, age 78, died peacefully on August 1, 2025 and went to be with his Lord. He was born on April 11, 1947 in Washington, D.C. He was educated in Maryland where he attended Duvall High School in Greenbelt. He served in the United States Army in Italy and returned to Washington to pursue a successful career in the travel and hospitality industry. He moved to Shreveport in 1974 and continued in the travel business. He later became the owner of G. Stearns Fine Antiques until his retirement in 2009.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry E. Chaney of Salem, Massachutes and Helen Chaney Carlow of Crofton, Maryland; a sister, Helen Allene Poole of Grasonville, Maryland and two brothers, Gary L. Chaney of Woodlawn, Maryland and James E. Chaney of Severn, Maryland.
Richard enjoyed the wanderlust for travel and adventure at a young age. He traveled to all seven continents and sailed all seven oceans to explore God’s magnificent handiwork. He was a connoisseur of antiques, art, horticulture, and music. He also was a superb cook. Enjoying dinner with friends was especially a favorite pastime. He enjoyed many simple things in life. Richard was loving, kind, and generous, and he traveled to the beat of a different drummer. He loved and enjoyed beauty of all forms. He was grateful for every day of his life and felt truly blessed.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shreveport, the English Speaking Union, Hypogeum Society, and former member of the prestigious Chaine des Rotisseurs.
He is survived by his niece, Michelle F. Smith of Stevensonville, Maryland and a nephew, James E. Chaney, Jr. of Annapolis, Maryland; longstanding friend and companion, Glenn Jackson, and a host of friends.
His family is grateful to the excellent care of Lifepath Hospice and all care providers during his final illness.
In accordance to his wishes, a private graveside service was held on August 4, 2025 at Greenwood Cemetery on Stoner Avenue with Dr. Jeff Raines, Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church presiding. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
