Rev. David Jay Greer

The Reverend David Jay Greer, Rector Emeritus of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Shreveport, died July 20, 2026. Father Greer was born October 7, 1929, to Reverend and Mrs. H. Ross Greer, both deceased. He was married to the late Barbara von Broock Greer, and is the father of three children, John Greer of Shreveport, LA, Douglas Greer (wife Ellen) of Saint Johns, FL, Barbara Greer of Fairfax, VA, and a grandson Scott Greer of Atlanta, GA. Father Greer received a bachelor’s degree from Wagner College and a master’s degree in divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1955. He loved the Lord Jesus and His people.

Father Greer was ordained in 1956 by Bishop Frederick Goodwin at St. Paul’s, Richmond, VA. He served as associate rector at St. Paul’s, Richmond, was the rector at Christ Church, Gordonsville, VA and St. James’, Warrenton, VA. He retired as the rector of St. Paul’s, Shreveport, LA in 1989. In retirement he served as interim rector at eight churches in Louisiana, Texas, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Michigan. He was also the Interim Dean at Christ Church Cathedral, Houston, TX.

During his career, Father Greer was dean of the Piedmont Region of the Diocese of Virginia, president of the Alumni Association for the Virginia Theological Seminary, president and member of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Western Louisiana, dean of the Shreveport Convocation and a member of the Ecclesiastical Court for the Diocese of Western Louisiana. He served on the boards of the Highland School, the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Direction, Live Oak Multi Faith Retirement Center and Bishop Noland Episcopal Day School.

Father Greer served churches in some capacity as priest until he was 90 years old, at which time he settled into the role of parishioner. He enjoyed the Centering Prayer Group, Bible study, Wonderful Wednesdays, and the Tarshar Society.

Father Greer’s funeral and internment will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Shreveport. After internment in the Memorial Garden, a luncheon will be held in the church Parlor.
