Funeral services for Daniel Talmadge Saxon, Sgt. First Class Ret., 88, will be held on Monday, November 3, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at Summer Grove Baptist Church, 8924 Jewella Ave., Shreveport, Louisiana. Burial will follow at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery at 11:30 a.m., 7970 Mike Clark Rd. in Keithville, Louisiana. A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Dr. in Shreveport. Officiating the service will be Dr. Heath Peloquin assisted by Bro. Steve Gilley.
Dan was born on November 24, 1935, at Wakefield Plantation in Ferriday, Louisiana to Presley Saxon and Claudia Watts Saxon and passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2025, in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Dan accomplished much in his lifetime. During his high school years, he won the 1961 weightlifting championship at Northwestern State College. He was very active in fitness training and was awarded several awards. He was an avid pistol and rifle shooter having shot rifles and pistols in at least 10 states and at least 54 different ranges in the U.S. Some special accomplishments include taking part in three different pistol national championship teams and was on one all army national championship team. He won the master class pistol championship in LA in 1979 and became service pistol distinguished in 1982. He won the Mississippi State Rifle Championship in 1991 and the LA Service Rifle Championship in 1993. Dan obtained the master rifle championship for LA in 1988 and placed 3rd in the National Guard Championship in 1993. He obtained the President’s 100 in pistol in 1992 and became service rifle distinguished in 1992. He won the National Guard Chief “50” of US in 1993 and won several 1st place awards in the Senior Olympics shooting regularly for over 25 years. Dan worked for the State of Louisiana for 25 years in various departments, the last being Mosquito Control. After his retirement from the State, he went to work for the Caddo Parish Commission in Mosquito Control and was known as (Dan the mosquito man). After retiring from there, he worked with DeSoto Parish and other mosquito control districts as well. Dan was an avid hunter with many trophies.
Dan is preceded in death by his father, Presley Saxon; mother, Claudia Watts Saxon; sister, Mary Lou Saxon Squyres; brother, James Presley Saxon; and son-in-law, James D. Shafer. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Jacqueline Lockwood Saxon; former wife, Virginia Normand; sons, Gordon L. Saxon, and Larry E. Saxon (Lee Ann); daughters, Tammie Saxon Shafer, and Melinda G. Saxon Bailey (Anthony); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other family members, Robert LeGrand (Robin), Stephen W. Gibson (Melissa), and Darlene LeGrand Normand (Jon). 
Serving Dan as honorary pallbearers will be Keith Brossette, Butch McInnis, and Charlie Frazier. 
In lieu of flowers (donations) may be made to Summer Grove Baptist Church, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the church of your choice.
