Peggy Perkins Hines

Peggy Perkins Hines, born on October 20, 1955, passed away on August 2, 2026, at Minden Medical Center from complications related to septic shock. While her later years were challenged by illness, she will not be defined by her health battles, but rather by the vibrant, generous, and joyful life she led.

Born in Elizabeth, Louisiana, and raised in the surrounding rural southwest region of the state, Peggy embraced a lifetime love of simple joys. She often told stories of her childhood, recalling how she loved to run… fast… and play outside. A night-owl who voraciously read and sewed with a lifelong thirst for learning, one of her favorite early memories was the day she discovered she was “blind as a bat” during a school vision screening. Getting her first pair of glasses changed everything; she always recalled the pure joy of looking up and realizing for the very first time that “trees have leaves.”

Peggy was a strong and independent woman of deep faith who loved her church family immensely and found great joy singing in the choir. Her passion for community was evident in her career, where she poured her heart into two distinct roles: working alongside Ozzie Ingram with the FBC Youth Group, and serving as the dedicated office manager at Hines Family Practice. On top of these roles, she was always up for the challenge of serving as a chaperone and taking the kids around the state in her “Econoline Van.”

Having her first child, Nat, at the young age of 15 gave Peggy a perspective of the challenges of early motherhood. This resulted in a deep and special understanding of young mothers and single moms.

Meeting Carl while working at Minden Hospital was a truly monumental moment—not just for Peggy, but for her children, Sonya and Nat. Bringing Carl into their lives brought immense stability, happiness, and a shared future that changed their family’s story forever.

Second only to her devotion to Jesus and Carl, Peggy’s greatest loves were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She poured boundless love and joy into their lives and cherished every moment spent together.

Beyond her family, Peggy had a flair for fashion and loved downtown Minden. She spent many happy hours hunting for the perfect outfit to enhance her “winter skin tone” at Vivian’s and Ratcliff’s. She also made sure that Nat and Carl spent time at McCrary’s.

She was a deeply generous gift-giver who delighted in finding the absolute perfect present to match the current passions of her friends, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, frequenting Bert’s—and in later years, Amazon—to bring them joy.

Peggy took immense joy when Evelyn “Mimi” Hines opened her gift shop in downtown Minden. This venture not only allowed Peggy to contribute in a meaningful way to the community she loved, but it also introduced her to the Dallas Market. To this day, it remains a family mystery as to what Peggy, John Glaze, Patti Odom, Ava Morgan, and Mimi actually got into during those legendary trips “at market.”

A proud and highly active member of the Minden community, Peggy was recognized in 1985 as the outstanding local president by the United States Jaycee Women. In those days her energy and drive knew no bounds; she famously participated in a fundraiser walking a stretcher from Minden to Memphis to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She also carried her passion for St. Jude into her role as the publicity chairman for the 1986 Minden St. Jude Radio Auction, which raised $53,000 that year.

For many in Minden, 1202 Broadway was more than an address—it was a place where everyone felt at home. Under Peggy’s watchful eye, exceptional cooking, and unmatched gift for hospitality, the house became known for gatherings filled with laughter, fellowship, celebrations, and the kind of love that made every guest feel like family. Countless memories were made, and those who walked through the door always left feeling welcomed, cared for, and loved.

Her family wishes to extend their deepest, heartfelt gratitude to the hundreds of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, medical assistants, and receptionists in Minden and Bossier City who provided such compassionate care and treatment to Peggy over the years.

She will be remembered always as a loving wife and mother, a faithful servant, and a pillar of some of Minden’s most meaningful traditions.

She was preceded in death by her father, Willie Ray Perkins; her mother, Edna McMullen Perkins; her infant sisters, Renee Perkins and Nellie Perkins; her nephew, Jonathan Perkins; her brother-in-law, Carl Brooks; and her infant great-grandson, Owen Lee Fitts.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Carl Henry Hines, M.D.; her son, Nathaniel Lee Hines and his wife, Jennifer, of Winnsboro, South Carolina; her daughter, Sonya Hines Fitts and her husband, Darrell, of Greenbrier, Arkansas; her sister, Mary Oneta Brooks, of Leesville, Louisiana; her brother, H. Jack Perkins and his wife, Janet, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and her brother, James Edison Perkins and his wife, Debbie, of DeRidder, Louisiana.

She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Emily Markunas and her husband, Nick, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Madeline Hines, of Seattle, Washington; Elizabeth Hines, of Berlin, New Jersey; Kimberlyn Henry and her husband, Colton, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Maggie Roberts and her husband, Brandon, of Greenbrier, Arkansas; Kobe Fitts, of Greenbrier, Arkansas; and Sarah Brown and her husband, Johnathon, of Lakewood, Colorado.

She is also survived by her four great-grandchildren: Maisie Markunas, Jack Markunas, Maddox Henry, and Nova Roberts; along with numerous beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Service Details:

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden, Louisiana, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Celebration of Life Service will take place on Friday, August 7, 2026, in the West Chapel at First Baptist Church (FBC) Minden at 10:00 AM. Following the service, Peggy will be laid to rest in Mount Pisgah Methodist Cemetery outside Emerson, Arkansas.
