Paulyn "Paul" Dougherty

Paulyn Gill Dougherty, "Paul" to her family, died Monday, June 10, 2019, at age 99. She was born in Homer, Louisiana, on April 19, 1920, to Edgar White Gill and Verna Torbet Gill. She lived in Homer all of her life except for her college years and the years her husband, the late Judge Frank M. Dougherty, was in law school. She grew up in her parents' home on North Main Street, then moved to South Main Street to the home originally belonging to her grandparents, George G. and Lizzie Gill, which her mother divided into two houses and repositioned on South Main for her two daughters.
Paulyn graduated from Homer High School in 1937, attended Sophie Newcomb College, and graduated from Centenary College. She returned to Claiborne Parish to teach business at Summerfield and Homer High Schools. She married Frank Dougherty on February 17, 1946, after he returned from four years in the South Pacific during World War II. They were married for 43 years. While he was in law school at Baylor University, she completed all the course work for her master's degree in business, but never turned in the final revision of her thesis, because of the birth of their first child.
Homer is where she wanted to live, and she was proud that her Gill ancestors were some of the earliest residents. The Gills also were founding members of First United Methodist Church in Homer, and she was pleased to have the longest membership of anyone currently living, although she had not been able to attend in many years. She was a member of the Crusaders-Gleaners Sunday School Class.
In the early 1990s she developed a severe and painful illness, Trigeminal Neuralgia, which was triggered by cold air touching her face. Although most of the pain was relieved by several brain surgeries, she lived the rest of her life in fear of the pain returning. Because of this she withdrew from many activities she had loved, including attending her church and garden club and working in her flower beds.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Dr. George Gill. Survivors include her sister Ruth Gill James and her husband Vernon, of Homer; her daughter Ruth Dougherty Fletcher; and husband Bob, of Roswell, GA, and her son John Michael Dougherty wife Anita, of Weatherford, TX. She leaves three much loved grandchildren, Scotty Fletcher Brewington (Travis) of Roswell, Ga, Jordan Fletcher of Atlanta, GA, and Lauren Dougherty Spillers (Wes) of Weatherford, TX. She was especially pleased to have seven great grandchildren: Addison, Michael, Colt, Landry, and Brooklyn Spillers, and Cash and Hank Brewington.
She also loved her nieces and nephews Darrell James, Peachie Gill Schneider, Carolyn Gill Topp, Glen Gill, Dr. John Gill, Mary Gill Bryant, and the late Jan Gill Druin.
She grew up in the Homer FUMC, four houses down from her home on North Main. She was a devout Christian from an early age, and in her healthier years, loved the hours she spent studying the Bible. Her own Bible is extensively underlined, annotated, bookmarked with Billy Graham newspaper columns, and held together with rubber bands, the sign of a book well read. After her eyesight failed, she faithfully followed Dr. Charles Stanley's preaching on television and listened to the tapes of sermons delivered from her church. Her family now finds comfort knowing her body has been restored and she is with her Saviour and her family who have gone before her.
