Pauline Marie Gamble, 73, of Grand Cane, Louisiana, passed away Wednesday, 23 December, 2020.
Pauline was born 26 November, 1947, to Bronson Hobby and Raye Morton Gamble. The oldest of three children, "Big P" grew up in Mansfield, Louisiana, and attended school there, graduating from Mansfield High School as part of the Class of '65. She earned her bachelor's degree from Northeast Louisiana University (now University of Louisiana at Monroe) and her master's degree from Louisiana State University in Shreveport.
When she finished college, Pauline taught school in Houma, Louisiana, until accepting a position as a mathematician with Texaco in New Orleans, Louisiana. At the time, there were no women engineers in the oil and gas business and Pauline became one of the first women to work in that capacity. Pauline was at her happiest in South Louisiana - Mardi Gras, LSU football, the food, the music - she always felt that the larger-than-life spirit of that region fit her larger-than-life personality.
After retirement from Texaco, Pauline taught school in Louisiana and Texas and worked in institutional laundry management in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. If ever a place brought her as much joy as her beloved New Orleans, it was the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. She eventually returned to Louisiana, making her home in Grand Cane. Not one to sit idle, Pauline took a position teaching math at Central School, where she worked until her passing.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James Bronson Gamble. Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Donna Gamble Basco (Teddy Ray); the loves of her life, her nephew and niece, Andy Crocker and Katie Crocker Price (Jason); her great niece and nephews, who affectionally called her "Yine Yine," Alexis Austin, David "Fish" Price, and Jase Price; and a host of family and friends - Pauline never met a stranger and kept relationships with people ongoing, telling them "I'll talk to you later" instead of goodbye.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Mansfield, Louisiana. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be held at Beulah Cemetery. The family invites "Miss Gamble's" current and former students, whom she loved dearly, to serve as honorary pallbearers.
