SHREVEPORT, LA- A funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. Nolan Clayton Smith ,87, will be held Monday, February 13, 2017, 10 am at GracePointe Church of the Nazarene. The interment will follow the service at Forest Park West at noon. A visitation for family and friends will be at the church from 4:00-6:00 pm Sunday, February 12, 2017.
Nolan was born on September 8, 1929, and went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 10, 2017. He was born in Florien, Louisiana and attended Mt. Carmel School in Sabine Parish. An avid outdoorsman, Nolan loved nature and enjoyed camping with family and friends. He also loved to play the guitar, which he was known to do for the Louisiana Hayride. His career with firefighting was put on hold as he answered the call to duty to fight in the Korean War. Returning as a Navy Veteran, he served as a firefighter for thirty-six and a half years before retiring as an Assistant Fire Chief for the city of Shreveport. Throughout everything he never lost his faith. He spent many years as a member of the GracePointe Church of the Nazarene, where he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and served on the local board. He was also on the Louisiana District Advisory Board for the Church of Nazarene for twenty-five years. Nolan loved his family. He cherished spending time and making lasting memories with his children and grandchildren.
Nolan is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Cora Smith; brother, Elton Smith; sisters, Opal Smith and Sybil Hardin, sons; Michael, Rodney and Bill Smith. Those left to honor his memory are his loving wife, Gerry Tanner Smith; children, Debra Ouchley and spouse, Glenn, Pamela Griffin, Billy Woods and wife, Angie, Ben Woods and wife, Beth; grandchildren, Erin Williams, Amy Golter, Arlie Garcie, Jennifer Ameen, Russell Smith, Mitch Griffin, Tanner Woods, Michael Woods, Logan Woods, Jake Woods, Clint Woods; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Honoring Nolan as pallbearers will be Tanner Woods, Michael Woods, Logan Woods, Jake Woods, Clint Woods, Mitch Griffin, Andrew Ameen and Mikey Garcie.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Dr. David Hudson, Dr. Anil Veluvolu and Dr. Bryan Lusk.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to GracePointe Church of the Nazarene Mission Fund.
