Our beloved Myrtle Rose Colomb Scarlato passed into the arms of our Heavenly Father on July 6, 2025. We believe she was received in love by God the Father, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, Mary the Blessed Mother of Jesus, and the arms of her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her mother, Irene C. Winters; her father, Raymond Colomb; and her husband, William Carl Scarlato. She is survived by her children: Michael V. Scarlato and his wife, Deborah; William C. Scarlato II; Irene L. Scarlato; Rachele Scarlato Feys; Rose Scarlato Moser and her husband, Jim; and John M. Scarlato. Myrtle Rose was known as “Granny” and “GG” to her wonderfully large family, consisting of six children, fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Myrtle Rose was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on April 11, 1929. She and William Scarlato wed on March 21, 1949, and were married for 42 years until he passed. Her devotion to him never wavered through the remaining years of her life. She enjoyed a long career as a nurse at Christus Schumpert Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. In retirement, she became an active member of the Ladies Guild, Kaycee Auxiliary 8861, and Catholic Daughters, where she served as Vice Regent and Regent for part of her tenure. She also volunteered at Grace Home, Schumpert Cancer Treatment Center, Schumpert Hospice Center, and St. Mary of the Pines Catholic Church, preparing countless bereavement meals and Wednesday night suppers, as well as bringing Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. She was known for her pot roast, cakes, New Orleans style bread pudding, and limitless kindness. Myrtle Rose served her community with tireless devotion, and for that, she received the Gold Medal of Service from Bishop William B. Friend, the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shreveport.
To know Myrtle Rose was to be welcomed by her—into her home and into her heart. Her family echoes the words of Proverbs 31: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”
