Funeral services for Murrel “Elgin” Hogg will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at The Pentecostals of Bossier City, 2833 Viking Dr., Bossier City, Louisiana. Burial will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Hill Crest Memorial Park Cemetery in Haughton, Louisiana. A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Officiating the service will be Reverend Ryan Dean and Reverend Jerry Dean.
Elgin, a beloved member of the community, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at the age of 85. Born on September 8, 1939, Elgin was a lifelong resident of Louisiana and dedicated his career to the Teamsters Local Union, where he held membership number 568. He proudly retired from Yellow Freight after 38 years of service, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment.
A proud graduate of Plain Dealing High School, Elgin was not only known for his impressive work ethic but also for his quick wit and loving nature. He was a devoted and loving father and Pawpaw, always willing to lend a hand or share a laugh with his family and friends.
Elgin had a myriad of interests that kept him actively engaged throughout his life. He found joy in woodworking, fishing, hunting, and small engine mechanics. His hands were a testament to his craftsmanship and dedication, whether it was building something from scratch or fixing an engine.
His devotion to his faith was equally significant, as he was an active member of The Pentecostals of Bossier City. Elgin served on the church board under four different pastors and was a vital member of the Usher staff. His contributions to the church community reflected his deep commitment to service and fellowship.
Married to his wife, Shirley Ruth Goss, on October 27, 1960, Elgin cherished their union and built a loving family together. His love extended beyond his immediate family to encompass his community, where he was recognized as a friendly face and a reliable presence.
A passionate LSU football fan, Elgin enjoyed cheering for his team, showcasing yet another layer of his vibrant personality. Elgin’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love, hard work, and faith will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
Elgin was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Oudia Hogg, brothers, Bill Hogg, and Eugene Hogg and his sister, Ouida Nordmeyer. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Goss Hogg; son, Charles Hogg and wife, Donnelle Hogg; daughters, Cheryl Hogg Tucker and husband, Barry and Theresa Hogg Dupree and husband, Allen; grandchildren, Emily Tucker Brooks, Neal Tucker, Beth Tucker Modgling and husband, Phillip, Joshua Dupree and wife, Bridget, Jacob Dupree, and Zackey Hogg; great-grandchildren, Jathan Brooks, Allison Brooks, Natalee Modgling, Shelton Modgling, Blake Modgling, and Melody Modgling.
Honoring Elgin as pallbearers will be Neal Tucker, Phillip Modgling, Zackey Hogg, Jathan Brooks, Joshua Dupree, and Jacob Dupree. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Shelton and Blake Modgling. Serving as greeters will be Allison Brooks and Natalee Modgling.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be made to the Pentecostals of Bossier Global Missions, 2833 Viking Dr., Bossier City, Louisiana 71111, in memory of Pamela Smoak Memorial.
