Milton Lovert Smith, age 90, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026. Born on June 9, 1936, in Port Arthur, Texas, Milton was the son of Lovert and Tressie Smith.
Milton attended Oak Grove School in Stanley, Louisiana, where he met the love of his life and soulmate, Jeanette. The two were married on January 29, 1955, and shared an extraordinary 71 years of marriage together. Their love story became the foundation of a family that would grow to include five children, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Milton was known for his unwavering faith, strong work ethic, and generous heart. He was the proud owner of Smith’s Home Furnishings in Logansport for more than 40 years, where he built not only a successful business but also lasting friendships throughout the community.
Milton was an excellent provider and leader for his family. He enjoyed traveling and visited many places throughout his life, but his favorite destination was always Cades Cove. He found joy in gardening, woodworking, and raising cattle, hobbies that reflected his appreciation for hard work and God’s creation.
Those who knew Milton will remember his bright smile, striking blue eyes, and deep love for Jesus Christ. Above all else, he cherished his beloved Jeanette, affectionately known as his “Sweetie Pie.” When asked the secret to a long and happy marriage, Milton’s answer was simple: “Yes ma’am” and “Sweetie Pie.”
His grandchildren held a special place in his heart and will forever treasure the memories of receiving “Papaw Pills”—his famous Hershey’s Kisses—which became a beloved tradition and sweet delicacy in the Smith family.
Milton was preceded in death by his parents, Lovert and Tressie Smith; his son, Kyle Smith; his brother, Ray Smith; and his sister, Wanda Morris.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 71 years, Jeanette Smith; his children, Burt Smith and wife Kerry Lynn, Tim Smith and wife Lavonna, Terry Smith, and Tina Hunter and husband Wayne; his 13 grandchildren, Jacqueline, Jessica, Katie, Fallyn, Brandon, Cody, Christopher, Jonathan, Logan, Caden, Amber, Shaina, and Cheyenne, along with their spouses; 22 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and his brother-in-law and special friend, William "Son" Palmer.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are his grandsons, Christopher Smith, Jonathan Smith, Cody Lee, Caden Smith, Logan Smith, and Tanner McDonald. Honorary pallbearers are Mack McCoy, Pat Vergo, Jim Slaid, Don Paul, Eddie Atkins, Buford Huff, Rodney Sanders, and Johnny Ray Jones.
Milton’s legacy of faith, love, hard work, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
