Merhl Lee Charbonnet Smith, 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 11, 2018 where she passed peacefully surrounded by her children. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at The Glen Chapel in Shreveport, LA, with Father Tim Hurd officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Louis Cemetery, New Orleans, LA in the family tomb.
Merhl Lee was born April 22, 1926 in New Orleans, LA to the late Sidney and Odette Lasseigne Charbonnet. She graduated from Holy Angels Academy and attended Business School. She had many fond memories of Abita Springs, Reserve, Mandeville, and Madisonville while growing up. Merhl Lee met and married her loving husband, March Edward Smith, Sr. at the age of 18. She enjoyed many activities such as dancing to Big Band music, bowling, playing cards, and watching the New Orleans Saints football games. She truly loved her life as a homemaker which included her excellent cooking skills. Merhl Lee stayed very true to her native heritage of cooking using the trinity (onions, bell pepper, celery) in all her dishes, and don't forget the garlic! She was a faithful Christian woman and was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, where she was on the Bereavement Committee and was a Yarn Angel. Merhl Lee enjoyed life to the fullest. She was a warm and friendly person who never met a stranger.
Merhl Lee was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by her three children, Lynda Marie McDuff (Mark), March Edward Smith, Jr. (Sue), and Odette Marie Smith; five grandchildren, Stephen Edwards (Stacey) Jessica Smith, Charlie Smith (Stefanie), Bradley Smith (Sarah) Jeremy Smith (Dana); nine great-grandchildren, Kameron, Khloe, Mikah, Anslee, Harper, Sydney, Wrigley, Sweden, and Elin.
The family wishes to give a special thanks to the staff at St. Joseph Hospice, Dr. Randy DelMundo, Dr. Jonathan Davis, Pelican House at The Glen, Ann Weeks, Cheryl McGowen, Jo Ann Williams, and Letha McCall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and or to Holy Angels Residential Facility.
