Maxie R. Garrett

HAYNESVILLE, LA: Maxie Ruth Billingsly Garrett was born on May 10, 1927, to Clyde "Pop" and Sallie Ruth Knox Billingsly in Claiborne Parish, LA. She went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 6, 2016, after a brief illness in Christus Schumpert Hospital in Shreveport, LA. Maxie was a dedicated educator for almost forty years. She always wanted to be a teacher and loved every day in the classroom. Through the years she taught many students and even children of former students. She always thought of her former students as her children, because they had been a part of her life for each school term. She appreciated parents for allowing her to share in their children's lives. Maxie was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary organization for women educators, for 63 years, serving as state president in 1982-84. She was also a member of Haynesville Study Club, where she gave the Christmas book review each year. Maxie also enjoyed playing cards at Ladies Day each Wednesday. Maxie loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Haynesville United Methodist Church, where she continued to teach Sunday School and had been an active member of WMU. Maxie loved traveling, having visited all fifty states plus many trips abroad and various cruises. She never missed an adventurous opportunity, such as riding a camel in Egypt, riding in a race car in Dallas, and swimming with the dolphins in Jamaica. Maxie loved people and had the unique ability to make others feel special. Some of her hobbies were reading and watching her favorite sports team, LA Tech. Maxie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, William "Bill" Garrett, several brothers-in-law and special cousins, Doyle Anglin and Joe Anglin. She is survived by special "sister," Frances Anglin, her "sons," Barry Anglin and wife Paula, Dr. Eddie Anglin and wife Rhonda and Mike Anglin. She is also survived by cousin, Larry Knox and wife Linda, sister-in-law, Sadie Garrett and special grandchildren who called her "Gran Maxie"; Allison, Knox, Brad, Carrie, John Anthony, Alexander, Bailey, Will and Mary Morgan, plus other cousins and dear friends. Also, special thanks to Joy Bass, her caregiver. Funeral services for Maxie were at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at the Haynesville United Methodist Church with Rev. William Peoples, Rev. Henry Stone and Rev. Fred Wideman officiating. Interment followed at Arlington Cemetery in Homer. The family received friends at the church on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. Pallbearers were Knox Anglin, Brad Anglin, Will Anglin, Robert Anglin, Gene Winegeart, Larry Johns, and Steve Lewis. Honorary pallbearers were Coach Alton "Red" Franklin, William Larry Garrett, and Doug Lewis. In lieu of flowers honoring Maxie, her family suggests memorials be to Haynesville United Methodist Church.
