A Memorial Service for Max Alton Corley will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall St., Shreveport, Louisiana with a reception to follow. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Officiating the service will be Dr. Tom Harrison and Dennis K. Eck.
Max was born on February 22, 1945 to Aubrey and Lillian Corley in Jacksonville, Texas and passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2021 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Max graduated from Alto High School where he was named All East-Texas in football. He attended Stephen F. Austin University, where he was a Lumberjack Tackle. Having spotted his talent and abilities, he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers. However, he declined the offer choosing instead to enter the funeral service profession.
Max was a distinguished Funeral Director and Mortician. He was a pioneer and innovator in prepaid funeral plans. He was also involved with the Louisiana Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. He retired after 25 years of service as Vice President and General Manager of Rose-Neath Funeral Homes. He was the prior owner of Hawthorn Funeral Home in Carthage, Texas. He was a mentor and friend to those he worked with throughout his career in the funeral industry.
Max was an avid horseman, owner and breeder of Quarter Horses and Thoroughbred Horses. He was an active member of the Greenwood Riding Club and was involved with the Louisiana Horse Racing Association. He was a dedicated volunteer to the Caddo Parish Mounted Patrol. He was a supporter of Paralyzed Veterans of America and a proud member of the NRA. He was an unofficial member of the Comedy Club, also known as Joker/Prankster. He was the Grand Master of great story telling! A true outdoorsman, Max was a skilled hunter and fisherman. He was a passionate bird lover, with over 40 doves and he was a talented gardener with a green thumb who loved spending countless hours in his yard.
Max is survived by his wife, Margaret Corley of Shreveport, Louisiana; son, Stephen M. Corley and wife, Elena of Stonewall, Louisiana; daughters, Lisa C. Chreene of Nashville, Tennessee and Robin P. Eck and husband, Dennis of Houston, Texas; sister, Sue Stone and husband, Robert of Dallas, Texas; seven grandchildren, Lauren Corley, McKenzie Corley, Mia Corley, Payton Chreene, Hannah Chreene, Allison Ray, and Abigail Eck; five great-grandchildren; nephew, Kyle Palmer and niece, Lea Savage.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be his colleagues of Rose-Neath Funeral Homes.
The family suggests memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
