Maurice Riemer Calhoun, Jr.

On April 18, 2026, Maurice Riemer Calhoun, Jr. joined his mother Clista Andrews Calhoun, father Maurice Riemer Calhoun, daughter Marian Calhoun Snapp, sister Carolyn Huckabay and her husband Bill, brother Thomas A. Calhoun and his wife Beverly along with numerous nieces and nephews in eternal peace and into God's loving arms after a long and fruitful life.

Born in Texarkana, Arkansas on February 3, 1937, he was a resident of Mansfield, LA since 1939 when his family moved to Mansfield where the Calhoun family had lived for generations.

Riemer spent his teenage years restoring what was then called a "hot rod" that was featured on the cover of an automotive magazine. He later transferred his interest in cars to NASCAR and tried never to miss a race. On numerous occasions, he would loan one of his antique Model T Fords to others and enjoyed relating the fact that previous owners of his home had often hosted Henry Ford.

A 1955 graduate of Mansfield High School, he attended Louisiana Tech before transferring to Northwestern State College. However, he soon chose marriage over academics. Riemer and Marcia Copeland were married in 1957 and lived in Mansfield from that time until his death.

Riemer first worked at Calhoun Builders for his amazing father who was his business mentor and spiritual guide. When Riemer, Sr. later offered him the business with no assets and no guarantee of success, he accepted the challenge and through hard work was successful in developing subdivisions, building countless homes and commercial buildings before concentrating on the construction of apartments. He was responsible for building more than 150 multi-family complexes in three states. Riemer earned his pilot's license and flew weekly in order to oversee their construction. He later formed Calhoun Property Management in order to managing the more than 7200 units.

Riemer was a long time member of the First Baptist Church where he made his profession of faith in Jesus and was baptized at a young age. He served his church as a deacon and was an active member of the Friendship Class. He was a loving father, grandfather, and leader in his community. While still in his 20's Riemer served on the Mansfield City Council and seldom, if ever, turned down any request for support from the various civic and church organizations that sought his help.

His mother's death shortly before his 15th birthday greatly impacted Riemer's life. He took great satisfaction in honoring her memory by the restoration and naming of the Clista A. Calhoun Center in 2012. This popular community venue was once part of the Mansfield Female College campus and adjacent to the main building of the college that was home to the Calhoun family.

He liked to read about the early history of the American West and the important role Texas Longhorn cattle played during that era. Eventually his herd of cattle consisted solely of Longhorns. Active in the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association, he served on its board and later as president of the organization.

Riemer was most proud of his five grandchildren and included them along with their parents in the family partnership known as the Briarwood Group. He enjoyed taking family trips yearly and loved recalling the adventures each one provided. Visits to Mansfield included a three parish tour of the C+ Farms along with telling his grandchildren the history of each farm and the unique circumstances relating to its ownership.\

Dedicated to work, Riemer seldom took vacations claiming he didn't want to be out of Desoto Parish for more than three days. He left long trips to Marcia until they became travel friends with Hilda and Judson Rives and Andrea and Rhonny Valentine. Israel became his favorite place especially those sites verified by the Bible as where Jesus walked.

Riemer is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marcia Copeland Calhoun, son Murray Andrew Calhoun (Caroline) and their children, Lydia Vivian Calhoun and Murray Andrew Calhoun, Jr. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Greg Snapp and Marian and Greg's children, Mary Kathleen Snapp, James Samuel Snapp, and Stewart Gregory Snapp.

The family is grateful for the many expressions of support shown them during Riemer's illness, especially the support of his loyal workers, Major Ross, Donald Ray Alexander, Willie Williams and Joe Freeman. Their friendship and help during this difficult time was truly a blessing and will never be forgotten.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent to the donor's choice, the Clista A. Calhoun Center 101 Monroe Street, Mansfield, La 71052 or the First Baptist Church P. 0. Box 983, Mansfield, LA 71052.
