Mary Margaret Lightfoot Jones

Our Mother, Mary Margaret Lightfoot Jones of Shreveport, Louisiana, left this world to be with her Savior on August 15, 2023.

She was surrounded by her girls. Born Mary Margaret Stevens in Many, Louisiana to Turner Elmo Stevens and Grace Yvonne Darby Stevens.

Mr. Stevens, her father, was a Sergeant with Shreveport Police Department and Mrs. Stevens, her mother, was a florist.

She was their only child and highly adored.

Mary Margaret attended Byrd High School along side her lifelong friend Linda Yeager. She graduated Byrd Class of ‘56. In her adolescent years and up until adulthood she was an accomplished competitive skater, model and member of both adult softball and bowling leagues. She was a longtime member of UDC Chapter #397 and DAR Chapter in Mansfield, Louisiana. She was a genealogist and her research aided books written on the lives of The Massey’s, The Lightfoot’s, The Darby’s and the McFerren family lineage. In the early 80’s she joined Pilot Club International. She went on to become the first Governor of the Louisiana District for Pilot International. During her time with Pilot Club she helped form the DeSoto Parish Tourism Committee which was very dear to her and showed the deep love of her community and its preservation. Mary was a lifelong, active parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mansfield where she and Harry raised their seven children. In 1990, at the age of 52, she went to work for the Department of Motor Vehicles. She became regional manager of the DeSoto Parish DMV and retired from the State of Louisiana in 2006. Following the death of her husband, Harry Lightfoot, she re-united with her childhood love Elbert Monroe “Sonny” Jones and they married in 2006. She left Louisiana to make a home with Sonny in Tennessee. During her time in Tennessee she made many friends but none as dear to her as Dr. Lee Carter and his wife Teresa Beckham Carter.
