Our precious mother, Mary Geneva Savell Pope, was born September 21, 1924 in Shreveport, Louisiana and spent most of her life there. She was born to Clara LaCaze Savell McCarley and James Asby Savell.
Her mother and stepfather, Earnest F. McCarley, whom she dearly loved and referred to as "Dad," raised her. She graduated from Fair Park High School. Preceding her in death are husband, Lewis Edward Pope, Jr.; mother, Clara and "Dad" Earnest; as well as sister, Virginia Savell Williams Pilinski.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, James E. Pope and wife, Darlene Pope, Lewis E. Pope, III and wife, Jamie Pope; daughter, Maureen Pope Faulkner and husband, Peter Faulkner; grandson, James E. Pope, II and wife, Natalie Pope; granddaughters, Lorie Parker and her children's father, Jeff Murphy, Dawn Parker Southwell and husband, Mike Southwell, Shelly Pope Humphries and husband, Chancy Humphries, Sarah Pope, Stacie Pope Self and husband, Matt Self; great-grandsons, Christian Murphy and wife, Natalie Murphy, Sebastian Murphy, Conor Murphy, James Tyler Pope, David Garrett Pope, Michael Southwell and Brayden Humphries; great-granddaughters, Brittany Southwell, Averie Self, Ellie Self; and numerous nieces and nephews.
You cannot speak of Mary without mentioning Lewis. Her husband was the love of her life. Where you saw one, you saw the other. Family and friends were blessed with memories from both. She loved to travel with and be with family. She loved to cook. Her specialties were her coconut pies, biscuits, potato salad and roast gravy. Going to church, music, sewing and TV were just some of her favorite things. The greatest job she ever had was being a great mom, and she sure succeeded. She was called "mom" to many that were not her biological children. There are too many to acknowledge but thanks to all who made her life special. Other jobs included working at a garment factory, neighborhood grocery store, and chiropractic office. She spent many enjoyable hours with her husband and sons doing upholstery.
Mary left this world January 17, 2022 to be with her loved ones that passed before her. A family service will be held with Pastor John Rabo officiating. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to her church. She was a member of the Shreveport First Church of the Nazarene where she received spiritual strength, peace, and many hugs.
