Mary Alice Dettenheim, age 85, found eternal peace on Friday, October 24, 2025, surrounded by members of her loving family.
Born on November 17, 1939, in Jonesboro, Louisiana, to Florice and Eva Shows, Mary grew up close to her family, spending countless joyful days playing with her cousins and friends. From the moment she arrived, she was a ray of sunshine, known for her big bright smile and kind heart that touched everyone she met.
Mary attended Louisiana Tech University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in social work. During her college years, she met the love of her life, Edward “Ed” Dettenheim. She later went on to complete her Master’s degree in social work from Louisiana State University. Shortly after, in 1962, she and Ed were married and went on to raise five beautiful daughters together.
Mary dedicated her career to the Louisiana Department of Social Services, where she spent many years faithfully serving others before retiring. Her life’s work reflected her deep compassion and commitment to helping children and families. Of all her roles in life, none brought her more joy than being “Mammaw” to her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Jeri, Elizabeth, Carol, and Ruth; grandchildren, Paul, Sarah, Veronica, Skye, Erica, and Caleb; great-grandchildren, James, Destiny, Harmony, Braden, Kami, Dakota, and Peyton; and great-great-grandchildren, Holly, Jude, Renigade, Phalicity, Kyler, and Mavis.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; parents, Florice and Eva; brother, Wayne; daughter, Eve; granddaughter, Amber; great-grandson, Timmy; and many other beloved family members and friends.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 2nd, at Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 405 E. 5th St., Homer, LA 71040, beginning at 1:00 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Andrew Brewster officiating.
Mary’s love, laughter, and compassion will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Port City Cat Rescue in Bossier City, Louisiana, www.portcitycatrescue.org/donate, in Mary’s memory — honoring her lifelong love of caring for others, both people and animals alike.
