Martelle Merritt Dunn, 95, passed away peacefully at home in Birmingham, Alabama, surrounded by her family, and was welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven on Saturday, May 20, 2023.

Martelle was born August 1, 1927, in Evergreen, Louisiana to Hasting and Eunice Merritt. She graduated from Evergreen High School and then trained to be a nurse under the supervision of the Sisters of Charity of Schumpert Hospital. Martelle married Merrille DeWitt “Jack” Dunn in 1945, and together they had one son, Joe Merrille Dunn. For over 35 years, Martelle cared for the people of Minden, serving as a nurse with Dr. John Hill. In 2020, Martelle moved to Birmingham, Alabama with her son and daughter-in-law to be close to family.

 Martelle enjoyed crafting and painting with Jack, family, and friends in their workshop in Minden; vacationing in Branson, Missouri; and in her later years, attending her great grandson’s baseball and basketball games.

Martelle is preceded in death by her husband Jack, brother Hasting Calvin “Buddy” Merritt, and sister Francis (James) Hageman.

She is survived by her son Joe Dunn and wife Ruthie; granddaughter Jennifer Hall and husband Jason; great grandson Graham Hall; sister-in-law Peggy Merritt; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Frank and Helen Dunn; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. By those who loved her dearly, she was affectionately called and will always be remembered as Telle, Mamma, Mother, Mammaw, Nanny, and Aunt Martelle.

A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Evergreen, Louisiana on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at 11:00 AM. Interment provided by Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden, LA.
