KATY, TEXAS: Larry Joe Saulters was born November 14, 1947 in Minden, Louisiana to Grady and Calesta Saulters. Larry attended Lisbon High School, in Lisbon, Louisiana, where he excelled in both the scholastic and athletic fields. He was selected All State in Baseball and Basketball for two years. He signed a basketball scholarship at Northeast Louisiana University, which is now the University of Louisiana Monroe. He was the starting point guard all four of his years and was the playmaker for Coach Lenny Fant. He was a good scorer and ball handler and was one of the best defenders on the team; but, his strong point was his contributions in assists. Larry still holds several ULM assists records and was selected to the ULM Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. At northeast Louisiana University, Larry was a biology major and in his senior year was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa. Which is a National Leadership Honor Society. After graduation, Larry was a graduate assistant at Nicholls State University, in Thibodaux, Louisiana. From there he taught and coached for two years at Jesuit High School, in New Orleans.
On June 1, 1969, Larry married Sherry Stewart. In 1973, he joined the pharmaceutical industry with Upjohn and Amgen. He retired in 2011 after 38 years in sales and management. Larry lived in Katy, Texas with his wife Sherry, where he was a member and deacon at Second Baptist Church 1463 Campus. He enjoyed playing golf and coaching baseball, but mostly spending time with his grandchildren.
The Lord called Larry home on Saturday, September 1, 2018, at his home in Katy, Texas. He was 70 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Calesta Saulters; his grandparents, Grady and Mae Dawson and Sam and Lessie Saulters.
Larry is survived by his wife of 49 years, Melinda Sherry Saulters of Katy; two sons, Clay Saulters and wife Sara of Germantown, Tennessee; Scott Saulters and wife Emily of Fulshear, Texas; one daughter, Sara Kate Zahn and husband Eric of Nashville, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Nicholas Saulters, Avery Saulters, Taylor Saulters, Riley Zahn, and Hunter Zahn; one brother, G. Glynn Saulters and wife Mary of Quitman, Louisiana; as well as his nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Visitation was held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday September 5, 2018 at Rocky Springs Baptist Church, where funeral services followed at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday with Brother Stuart Toms officiating.
Interment in Rocky Springs Baptist Cemetery, in Lisbon, Louisiana.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to Rocky Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
