Karen Ruth Strickland Moore was born on September 1, 1951, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Thomas L Strickland, Jr. and Carolyn Strickland Osborn. She passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 10, 2025, after a brave and lengthy battle with cancer.

Karen was born and raised in North Shreveport and was a proud graduate of Northwood High School. After attending college at Louisiana College, she returned home to start teaching. Karen’s 38-year career included stints at Parkway High School and Airline High School before settling into a role at Bossier Parish Community College. She served as chairman of the math department and was a pioneer in distance learning in the 1990s. She retired in 2010, after the birth of her first grandchild, but never stopped teaching.

Friends since a 5th grade horseshoe contest, she and Gary Moore married in December of 1972. Their 52-year marriage was an example to the steadfast commitment both of them had to God first and then to each other. They raised two daughters, Emily and Jennifer, and became grandparents to six grandchildren. Karen became Murmie to her grandkids, and they became her treasure. Her Halloween pumpkin patch and Christmas stocking reveals were favorites for the kids.

Karen loved her family and friends, of which there were so many, but she always had room for one more in her circle. She loved people the way Jesus teaches us to love and spent her retirement years serving faithfully. Her weekly bible study with prison inmates was something she cherished, even in her last days. She faithfully attended Trinity Heights Baptist Church as a Sunday School and VBS teacher and mission trip leader. In her retirement, she became a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church. She actively served with the Gideon Ladies Auxiliary and loved passing out Bibles to anyone she thought needed one.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas F. Strickland, Jr, Carolyn L. Osborne, and Bill Osborne, and her younger brother, Alan Strickland.

Karen is survived by her husband, Gary Moore; her daughters, Emily Hays (Phil) and Jennifer Norvell (Britt), along with her grandchildren, Finn, Adeline, Clara, Millie Hays, and Josephine and Ezra Norvell; her siblings, Kay Johnson (Billy), Keith Strickland (Jan) and Peggy Clower (John) and her in-laws, Sid and Lynn Campbell and Andy Moore.

Pallbearers will be John Allen, Kenny Hawthorne, John Wood, Tim Quinn, T Willie Moore, Collins Nix, Bill Meaney, and John Anderson.

For those wishing to honor Karen’s life and legacy, please consider gifts to some organizations that she loved: The Gideons Ladies Auxiliary- Shreveport East Camp, www.gideons.org the BPCC Foundation, www.bpccfoundation.org or your local church- specifically their mission or vacation bible school fund.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Chip McDonald and the staff at the Willis Knighton Cancer Center for their care during her illness.
