Josephine “Jo” Aiuvalasit Bernhoft entered eternal life on Monday, May 5, 2025. Jo was born on March 5, 1929, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Jack and Esther Mortensen Aiuvalasit. Jo earned a BA degree from St. Mary’s Dominican College, New Orleans, Louisiana, and began her career at Godchaux Sugar, where she met her husband of 60 years, the late Ernest Bernhoft, Jr. They moved to Jackson, Mississippi, and then on to Shreveport, Louisiana in 1962, where they lived for 55 years, raising three sons. She was an active member of St. John Berchmans Church, worked at A. C. Steere Elementary School from 1974 to 1994, and served as a volunteer at Schumpert Hospital for many years. Jo spent her last years near family in Shenandoah, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Bernhoft, Jr., her parents, and her brothers, Anthony G. and Jack I. Aiuvalasit. She is survived by her brother, George S. Aiuvalasit and wife Jann; her three sons, Bruce Michael Bernhoft and his wife, Terry, of Oak Ridge North, Texas, Alan Ernest Bernhoft of Pasadena, California, and Craig Anthony Bernhoft and his wife, Shaun, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; her eight grandchildren, Jamie Michelle Bernhoft Durham (Brock), Lee Ernest Bernhoft (Melissa), Audrey Bernhoft, Alanna Bernhoft, Melody Bernhoft, Nicole Bernhoft Young (Joey), Danielle Bernhoft Littel (Steven), and Andrew Bernhoft; and her ten great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Jayla, and Eli Young, Peyton and Reese Durham, Heidi, Camryn, and Holly Bernhoft, Oliver and Bennett Littel.
Friends are invited to a visitation with the family at 9:30 am and Funeral Mass at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Sts. Simon & Jude Catholic Church, 26777 Glen Loch Drive, The Woodlands, Texas, 77381. The celebration of the Mass will be available through the Church on livestream.
A Shreveport, Louisiana, visitation will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, Shreveport, Louisiana, 71101. The following day, a Rite of Committal (Graveside Service) will be held at 11:30 am, on Monday, May 19, 2025, at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 7970 Mike Clark Road, Keithville, Louisiana, 71047.
Honoring Jo as pallbearers will be her two grandsons: Andrew and Lee Bernhoft, Dale Stewart, Rick Lyman, Paul Miramon, and Roger DeVilbiss.
