Joseph Gregory “Greg” Roppolo was born May 9, 1954 in Shreveport, LA. On Saturday May 3, 2025, Jesus called his good and faithful servant home. Greg passed peacefully at his beloved home on Caddo Lake in East Texas. His last moments were filled with the playful laughter and company of his precious grandchildren and devoted wife. Greg gracefully left his earthly paradise, the beautiful lake he cherished and home he built with his own hands, for his eternal paradise in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Greg grew up in Shreveport where he attended St. Joseph School, Jesuit High School, and Louisiana Tech Barksdale. From the young age of 16, he pursued his passion for aviation, setting his sights on a career that would take him to incredible heights. His dedication and zest for flying shaped his journey and carried that passion throughout his life. Greg became one of the youngest pilots to make Captain at Royale Airlines, where he worked until he transitioned to the major airlines including Transtar Airlines and Continental Airlines. He later retired from United Airlines, leaving behind a respected legacy in aviation. His skill, professionalism, and passion for flying inspired many and his contribution to fostering others in the industry will not be forgotten. Greg used his other talents and skills to build and conquer big projects. His gift of carpentry, construction, and an off -the -charts standard of perfectionism were unmatched. The details were always important to him. Many sought his expertise because of this and his honest reputation. To Greg, his word was not just a verbal commitment, but a Holy transaction, in all matters of life.
Beyond his career, Greg had a true servant’s heart. He eagerly helped others and had an incredible affinity to fix things – be it a broken appliance, disgruntled motor, or a troubled heart. Greg is described as hardworking and full of true grit. His faith ran deep and guided him through life’s peaks and valleys. He weathered many turbulent skies and high waters at the lake with a fearless determination and a calm nature. He often said “If you’re scared, go to Church”, and he would happily bring you with him without hesitation. He had a knack for helping you remember your purpose and making you feel like you belonged.
Greg had a deep sense of family and valued time spent with those he loved most more than anything. He was especially fond of his father- in -law, Frank Hailey, also known as “Grandad”, whom he enjoyed a special relationship with and many memories. Greg was a dedicated father, protector, and provider to his children. Greg made many sacrifices for his children that allowed them a childhood he could be proud of. He instilled a love for the water and outdoors that would afford them countless memories and quality time together as a family. This carried on into high school and college. Greg opened his home and kitchen table to everyone who entered. He treated his children’s friends as his own and lived to host and entertain them all with good BBQ, music, and lake fun. If you stayed for any amount of time, you were not leaving without eating not just one, but probably, two Texas sized plates of food. All who braved his tube or a rope swing and lived to share the story can vouch for the good times that echo in the memory of so many, because of him.
In later years, Greg became known as “Popsie” to his five grandchildren. They were the highlight of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them. They could always count on Popsie as the first to show up, the last to leave, and he was never empty handed. Popsie’s favorite answer was “yes”. Every day was a yes day. His children and grandchildren will never know a love quite like his outside of their heavenly fathers. This role in his life brought immeasurable fulfillment and a joy that was contagious.
Ultimately, Greg led by example and practiced what he preached day in and day out. If you were privileged to be on the receiving end of one of his, “Come to Jesus talks”, you know this to be true. He was generous beyond measure and lived by the principle of being a cheerful giver. Greg was quick to forgive and encouraged others to do so. His unwavering spirit, kindness, sweet nature, wisdom, and belief in Jesus, touched many lives. Greg was a mirror of God’s love and light everywhere he went. He leaves a legacy of grace and service, always putting others before himself.
Whether chasing sunsets in the sky or his grandchildren as the “tickle monster”, Greg lived a life rich in love and happiness. From helping others to enjoying the peace of Caddo Lake with family and friends, Greg’s presence brought the warmth of a sunny day, the comfort of a needed hug, and an effortless joy to those around him. We praise God for his life on earth and in Heaven. We rejoice that he has been made whole and reunited with his family and loyal companion, Top Gunner dog. He will be deeply missed, but forever remembered and held closely in the hearts of those who knew him.
Greg is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Paul Roppolo and Josephine Papa Roppolo, and brother, Michael Roppolo. Greg is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judy Hailey Roppolo; daughters, Michele Fruge and husband Pat, of Eunice LA and Lauren Ash and husband, Braylon and son, Michael Joseph Roppolo.
