John Thomas Prock, a devoted husband, loving father, proud veteran, and dedicated servant of the Greenwood community, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, at the age of 78.
Born in Dallas, Texas, on August 23, 1947, to James and Bobbie Prock, John moved with his family to Greenwood, Louisiana, in 1950. They settled at the family residence on Greenwood Springridge Road, the place he called home for the rest of his life. After graduating from Woodlawn High School in 1966, John answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Army and serving proudly from August 1966 to August 1969.
While stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, a blind date on December 26, 1966, changed the course of his life forever. John met the love of his life, Sarah Dianne Rayl. Though the distance of military service meant they only saw each other twice during their courtship, their love was undeniable. They were married on December 2, 1967, and shared a beautiful, devoted marriage of 59 years, raising four daughters whom John loved beyond measure.
John’s life was deeply defined by his unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of his neighbors. His legendary career with the fire service began around 1970 with the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department. He rose through the ranks from volunteer firefighter to Captain, Assistant Chief, and ultimately, Fire Chief. Following the department's dissolution, John’s dedication never wavered; in 1984, he was appointed by the Caddo Parish Commission as a charter member of the board of directors for Caddo Fire District #3.
Professionally, John was a skilled leader in the steel industry. He worked at Fab Steel in Waskom, Texas, through the 1970s, followed by the Quality Department at Kast Metals. In 1988, his career took him to Omaha, Nebraska, where he excelled as the quality manager and production manager in the steel foundry business. Even while living in Nebraska, John’s heart remained in Louisiana—he routinely assisted Caddo Parish Fire District #3 during his trips back home. Upon returning to Greenwood in 2003, he immediately stepped back into active service. Most recently, he was re-elected to the Caddo Parish Fire District #3 Fire Board, allowing him to continue pouring his heart and soul into the department he loved so deeply.
Above all things, John loved the Lord, and his life reflected a spirit of service, sacrifice, and faith. John was preceded in death by his parents, James and Bobbie Prock, and his brother, Joe Prock. His family takes comfort knowing that he is now resting peacefully in heaven, reunited with his parents and his brother.
