John Dennis McCann began his life on Earth on November 14, 1937. He was born in Minden, LA to Lemuel Dennis McCann and Myrtle Heflin McCann of Minden.
John graduated from Sibley High School in 1960. He met his sweetheart, Penelope Edwards in 1965 and made her his wife on May 21, 1965. They welcomed their son, John in 1969, and in 1974 their family was completed by the birth of their daughter, Julia.
John always worked very hard to take care of and provide for his family. After a 43-year career at the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant, he retired in 2005. With retirement came the opportunity to spend his days with his family that he loved so much. He also loved fishing and enjoyed working with his hands. You could often find him on a lawn mower or with a paintbrush in his hand. John was an active member of North Acres Baptist Church and had spent the last 62 years serving his church home.
After a long and courageous battle with cancer, John began his eternal life with his Lord and Savior on January 8, 2022, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
John was welcomed into Heaven by his parents; brother, Jerry McCann; sister, Nelda Ivy; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Left to honor his memory are his wife of 55 years, Penny McCann; children, John McCann (Sherry), and Julia McCann Miller; brother, William McCann; brothers-in-law, Frank Ivy and Malcolm Edwards; sister-in-law, Barbara Slack; aunt, Kathleen Richardson; grandchildren, Kirstie and Russell Wood, John Daniel Miller, Dylan Miller, Kim and Aaron Spence, Kaiti and Evan McFarland, Matthew and Taylor Boyd; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank everyone who has prayed, visited, called, brought food, and loved on us.
Visitation and funeral service will both be held on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, with the visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. and the funeral at 11:00 a.m. at North Acres Baptist Church, 1852 Lewisville Road, Minden, LA 71055. Graveside services will follow at Gardens of Memory.
