John William King, SR

A Memorial Service will be held for Mr. John W. King, SR, age 88, at Cornerstone Church, 501 West 3rd Street, Homer, LA, on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Matt Every, officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 1:30-2 p.m., prior to the service.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Raleith and Florence Greer King; a daughter, Ashley King; a sister, Ralette King Shinneman; an uncle and aunt, Dr. Eugie Alva Campbell and Iler King Campbell; and a step-son, Curtis Ryan Brooks.

John was born December 1, 1937, in Minden, LA, to John R. and Florence Greer King. He entered into peaceful rest on April 2, 2026, at his home with Deana and Lea by his side in Blanchard, LA. John grew up in Homer, LA, and was part of the Boy Scouts of America troop 72 with the NORWELA Area Council of Shreveport, LA, in which he earned many merit badges. He was thirteen years old when he attended a ten-state camp called Camp Leconte Echo in Eilmont, TN. John graduated from Homer High School in 1956 where he participating in various sports, as well as a cheerleader and played in the band for the Mighty Pelicans. He was a member of the Homer Country Club. John was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Homer where he serviced his Lord. Later, he attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM, to further his education upon where he made the Dean’s list and had been assistant to the chemistry teacher with laboratory work. John received training at the U. S. Naval Auxiliary Air Station and attended the Naval Air Training Command in New Iberia, LA. It was at the U. S. Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, MD, that he earned his “Wings of Gold” as a pilot after completing six landings aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Antietam, that had been operating in the Gulf of Mexico. Captian J. W. King was employed by American Airlines and was presented with a certificate for 25 years of honored service in 1991. Then, later was awarded a citation from American Airlines for his dedicated service in Dallas-Fort Worth in 1997 with over 20,000 hours of flight time. At the time of his retirement, John had flown to all 50 states, as well as international destinations such as Europe, the Caribbean, South and Central America. He really enjoyed cruises and plays at the Shreveport Little House Theater. John took delight in painting eagles that are displayed around his home.

John was a people person who never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face. He was one of the most loving people you would meet and was always the life of the party. John dearly loved his family and enjoyed making memories with them. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling, fishing and playing golf. When you met John, you had a friend for life.

He is survived by the love of his life of 12 years, Deanna Douget King and his service dog, Lea; son, John William King, JR, and wife Cheryl of Johns Creek, GA; granddaughter, Gabrielle King; brother-in-law, Bill Shinneman; five step-daughters, Rebecca Sue Batts and husband Kory, Anna Lynn Rogers and fiancé Mike Lindberg, Renee Volentine, Lisa D. Patburg and husband Sloan, and Jeri Ann Russo; thirteen step-grandchildren, Katie Dee Batts, Alex Rogers, Whitney Rogers, Katelyn Rogers, Kelly Russo, Seth Russo, Tyler Russo, Johnathan J. Russo, Gentry Russo, Robbie Biedenweg, Shannon N. Bayard, and Courtney Brooks; special friend and part of the family, Donny Morgan Paul Grimm, and Glynn Russo, and ; along numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

John’s family would like to express their gratitude to Bristol Hospice and their staff, along with, Mary Bourne for the care and compassion shown him.

In lieu of flowers honoring John, his family suggests memorials be made to Cornerstone Church Comfort Ministry or Alpha House in Minden, LA.
