John Gilbert Mortimer

John Gilbert Mortimer, Jr., 84, of Shreveport, passed away on Friday, August 20, 2021 at home with family at his side. John, commonly referred to as "Fath," "Gilbert," "G" or "Buddy," was born and raised in Woodstown, NJ on July 5, 1937. John graduated high school from Woodstown High in 1955 and joined the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Okinawa where he served as military police. After returning from Japan, John was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base. Here is where he met his beloved Patsy that he was married to for 63 years. After his service, John attended LSU in Shreveport (first graduating class) and continued at Louisiana Tech University where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing. John worked for Lucent Technologies and retired after many years. The most important part of John's life was his family. John, the oldest of six (#1) was extremely close to his siblings. John and Patsy had five children, ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends that were considered family. He was the focal point of his family and set the standard for a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. John had a unique way of making everyone he met feel a sense of belonging. His face would light up with the most genuine smile when he saw he was making you feel like the most special person in the world. He was strong, intelligent, loyal, witty and simply effortless to love. John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mineretta Mortimer and by his first born, John Mortimer III (Butch). John is survived by his wife and love, Patsy Mortimer; his children, Debbie Altazan (Elmo), Steve Mortimer, Danny Mortimer (Erica), and Ron Mortimer; his grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at Rose-Neath Southside Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Dr, Shreveport, LA on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Buster Paige officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Keithville, LA. Honoring John as pallbearers will be Joshua Smith, Shawn Sonnier, Brad McLeod, Tom Foster, Duke Mandina and Jeff Monsour. A special thanks to Dr. Dwayne Keller of Overton Brooks VA hospital for his medical and spiritual guidance over many years. Thanks to Christy Bauber, John's telehealth nurse of many years.
