John Lucas Cocchiara died peacefully on September 28, 2025, at 86 years old. He was born on September 16, 1939, in New Orleans and was raised there by his parents Joseph and Rose DiLeo Cocchiara. He attended Tulane University and Tulane University School of Medicine. He married Bonnie Sue Harris in 1960.
John started his medical practice as a general surgeon in 1971 and practiced for over 40 years in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He enjoyed helping patients and their families and always respected and commended the nurses and medical staff with whom he worked. John moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, after Bonnie died.
John was a devout Catholic all his life and had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother. He could be seen on his daily walks through the neighborhood praying the rosary. He was a life-long learner, a history enthusiast, and an avid reader. “Doc” was always equipped with sound advice and an inspiring tale for his grandchildren. He taught through example. As a true Sicilian, he appreciated a good meal (especially if someone else cooked), a sugary dessert, and great company.
John is survived by his brother, Joseph Cocchiara; and his sister, Leanna Smith; his three daughters and their husbands: Wendy and Randy Tannehill, Betsy and Paul Legendre, and Julie and Marty DeRouen; seven grandchildren: Dr. Katye Gayle and husband, Christopher Eldredge, Taylor Lee and wife, Heather Lee, Father Andy DeRouen, Quincy Gayle, Ellen Grimshaw, Emily Saltzman and husband, Hunter Saltzman, and Avery Grimshaw; seven great-grandchildren; two nieces; and numerous cousins.
