Our Nana passed away Sunday, March 29th, 2026, at Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler, Texas surrounded by her family.

Born March 8, 1935, in Natchez, Mississippi, she was the fourth of nine children and the oldest daughter of Dr. James Logan Sr. and Marie Tricou Logan. She was raised with four brothers and four sisters and graduated from Cathedral High School. Next, she attended Louisiana Tech University briefly before transferring and graduating with a business degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. At Southern Miss, Joan was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority and a member of the dance line.

In 1966, Joan married Robert F. Cowart (Bob). They raised four sons, Robert (Bob), Carson, Glen, and Mark. The family lived in Baton Rouge until 1974, then moved to DeRidder, Louisiana. After retiring from her 25-year career as a civil servant for the State of Louisiana’s employment division, Joan and Bob retired to “The Lake” (Toledo Bend). There, she enjoyed the last 22 years entertaining her 15 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter with fun at the lake. Her favorite times were July 4th and other holidays, spending time with family, playing Scrabble, and dominoes. She and Bob were “regulars” at the Toledo Senior Center, where Joan loved to dance, exercise, and visit with their “Lake Family”.

Joan was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in both DeRidder and Zwolle, Louisiana. She was a past president of the Kisatchie chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Catholic Daughters. Additionally, and probably more important to her, she was active in her church and served in a lay minister role as “extraordinary minister of Holy Communion”.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Clifford Anthony Logan, Richard Tricou Logan Sr., James George Logan, and Michael Joseph Logan. Joan is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bob Cowart of Many, Louisiana; sisters, Marjorie Baxter of Fairhope, Alabama, Carol Segrest of Apollo Beach, Florida, Susan Nowell of Mobile, Alabama, and Betty Kate Courtney of Carthage, Mississippi.

Finally, Joan’s legacy lives on through her four sons and their families, Bob Cowart and wife, Debbie, of Longview, Texas, Carson Cowart and wife, Janet, of Quitman, Louisiana, Glen Cowart and wife, Cammie, of Tyler, Texas, and Mark Cowart and wife, Shila, of Moss Bluff, Louisiana; grandchildren, Kailey, Molly Cowart Raggio (Jordan), Florence, McCall Cowart Gainey (Jake), Camden, Jacelyn Cowart LeGrange (Colin), Eden, Emerson, Jack Hayes, Ashton (Sydnee), Andrew, Bryce, Damian, Genevieve, and Hannah; and great-granddaughter, Mia.

Honoring Joan as pallbearers will be her grandsons Ashton, Andrew, Camden, Jack Hayes, Bryce and Damian. Joan’s beloved granddaughters will be honorary pallbearers as well.
