Shreveport — Jimmie Dale Green, age 89, died Friday, April 26, 2024, at the NW War Veterans Home, in Bossier City, after a battle with cancer due to Agent Orange.

HTC Jimmie Green Ret. is survived by his wife, Josephine, his “little Jo”; one son, SOCM Jeff Green Ret. and his wife Debra Green of 30 years. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, James Green, and Alexandria Green; four great-grandchildren, Emma, Preston, Kennedy, and Sutter; his sister, Paula Harvey of Taylor, AR and brother, Mack Green and his wife Kathy of Masonville, CO; nieces and nephews on the Harvey side include Gammy, Kelly Carpenter and Betsy Wiley. On the Kuntz side include sister-in-law, Loretta Toledo-children-Rick Toledo (wife- Karen), Charlotte Breeden (husband-Chuck and son-Wild Bill), Janice King (husband-Dre and daughters Amanda, Samantha, and Teresa).

Jimmie is a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, where he earned several medals and citations. He was born in Brister, AR and grew up in Springhill, LA. He went to Springhill High School until the 10th grade. Jimmie joined the Navy Oct.1952 during the Korean War and started his 20-year career. He completed HS by getting his GED while in the Navy. He was the oldest son of John (Red) Hampton Green and Inez McNew Green. As a child, he grew up poor during the Depression, but he managed to live a pretty normal life. His father was in the Navy during WW II, but when they moved to Springhill, he got a job at the new International Paper Mill, but stayed in the Navy Reserves for 30 years, retiring from the paper mill after 30 years. When the Korean War began, Jimmie left HS to join the Navy. He spent 20 years traveling all over Southeast Asia and other locations. He retired in San Diego, CA and moved his family back to Springhill and worked at International Paper Mill for about 10 years. He then moved to the Shreveport area and worked at the GM Plant for 15 years then retired. He continued working into his 70’s doing security contracting. Finally retiring and living his life with his wife, Josephine, of 64 years.

Jimmie’s accomplishments included Fixed Wing Private, Instrument and Commercial Pilot. In his free time, Jimmie enjoyed hunting pheasants with his favorite hunting dog Chief, driving all over the country, visiting family, and meeting up with Navy buddies at reunions every 2 years.

He served 20 years active duty and 10 years in the Fleet Reserve with distinction and retired as Chief Petty Officer Hull Technician/E-7. He commissioned (Plank Owner) the aircraft carrier USS Ranger (CV-61). His commendations include the National Defense Service Medal, China Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/Device 1960 and Good Conduct Medal X 4. You could take the Chief out of the Navy, never the Chief out of the man. Fair Winds and Following Seas.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, May 7, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Drive in Shreveport. Graveside services honoring the life of Jimmie will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at NWLA Veterans Cemetery in Keithville with full military honors. If family and friends wish to join the procession to the graveside service, please meet at Rose-Neath Funeral Home on Southside Drive at 9:30 a.m. The family invites friends and family back to the house for refreshments after the graveside service.
