Jerry Grass

Jerry Grass, age 90, passed away August 27, 2026 with the honor of a life lived with service, devotion, and curiosity. Born December 21, 1935, in Louisville, Kentucky, Jerry was the son of Virginia Mae Peckenpaugh and James Henry Grass. He was preceded in death by his parents, step father, Reese Johnson, his brothers Joe and John, his wife Doris, and his great-great-grandson Leo.

Jerry entered the Air Force National Guard while still in high school, beginning a distinguished 26-year military career. He enlisted on August 24, 1955, as an Airman 3rd Class and retired on February 28, 1981, with an Honorable Discharge and the rank of Chief Master Sergeant (E-9)—the highest enlisted rank in the United States Air Force. A proud Tail Gunner on B-52 bombers, Jerry flew 221 combat missions during the Vietnam War. He often recalled being shot at, yet his aircraft was never hit. He later worked as a technician in the development of air-to-ground missile systems for the B-52 fleet.

On May 1, 1964, Jerry married the love of his life, Doris Grass. Together they shared decades of adventure, especially traveling the country in their motor home. They proudly called themselves “Vagabonds,” embracing the joy of wandering and discovering new places. After retiring from the military, Jerry continued serving the nation’s defense through his work at Lockheed Martin, where he remained for approximately 10 years. A lifelong learner, he loved computers and was known wherever he lived as the person who could fix any computer problem.

Jerry “POP” is survived by his daughter Sharon Hines and her husband Byron of Bossier City, Louisiana; his son Rick Jones and his wife Treva of Orlando, Florida; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He also leaves his close friend, Lucille Williams. Jerry’s life was defined by service, loyalty, intelligence, and quiet strength. He leaves behind a legacy of honor, love, and unwavering dedication to family and country.

A celebration of life memorial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on October 7th, 2026 at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery.
