Jean Sink Galloway

Jean Galloway was peacefully called home on February 4, 2023 at the age of 89.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 24, 1933, Jean was the youngest child of Ernest Roy Sink and Verna Mae Simmons Sink.  While Jean was still a young child, the family spent a few years in Lake Charles, Louisiana, then moved to Shreveport, where Jean would make her home for the rest of her life.  Jean attended C.E. Byrd High School and Centenary College of Louisiana, where she joined Chi Omega sorority.  On December 23, 1953, she married Sidney Barrow Galloway and they began a wonderful life together, devoted to each other, their three children, and their Lord.

Jean and Sid were members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church from the time they married.  Jean served her St. Paul’s family in many capacities.  She was a member of the Vestry twice, serving as Junior Warden in 1992.  She has been President of the Women of St. Paul’s, on the Women’s Council, on the Rector Search Committee, spent several years as Gift Shop Manager and later served as Gift Shop Board Chair.  Jean chaired the 1994 Faith Alive Weekend and was Correspondence/Hospitality Chair of 2005 Faith Alive. She also served on the Diocesan Book Store Board and has been a Diocesan Convention Delegate.  Jean was a long-time Lay Eucharistic Minister, a Stephen Minister, a member of the Order of St. Luke, a Daughter of the King, a member of Queen Ester Guild, a member of the Prayer Partner Team, and on the St. Paul’s Hospitality Committee.  Jean was a wonderful hostess; one of her great joys was helping prepare lovely receptions and meetings at the church as well as opening her home for church functions.

Outside of her church work, Jean was a member of the Junior League and the Women’s Department Club.  She had a gift for finding the right words to provide comfort and support, and used it as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, sharing her experiences to help and encourage other women. Jean was an avid reader and was never without a book - devotions and spiritual growth to historical fiction to mysteries. She loved them all.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband; her sister, Joyce Sink Smelser; and her brother, Ernest Roy Sink, Jr.  She is survived by three children, Carolyn Galloway Melsheimer, Sidney Galloway, Jr. (Linda), and Charlotte Galloway Lewis (Brian).  Jean was “Grandmommy” to Erin M. Van Court (Joe), Steven Galloway, Kathleen G. Doney (Joel), Mary Charlotte L. Thomas (James), Amy G Medley (Travis), Sydney Melsheimer, Michael Galloway (Emma), Lisa Galloway, and David Galloway.  She was “Gigi” to four great-grandchildren and had many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to Sarah Susilovich of St. Joseph’s Hospice, Dr. Robert Martin, Carla Callendar and her sitters/caregivers from 2 Sisters Healthcare LLC, and the caregivers from Montclair Park, and Savannah at the Oaks.
