Jack L Jordan, Sr.

Jack Leon Jordan Sr, 89, went to his Heavenly home on September 28, 2016. Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 on October 2nd at Kingston Road Baptist Church. Services will follow at 2:30. Officiating will be Bro. Leland Crawford. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery in Stanley, Louisiana. Jack is preceded in death by the love of his life of 67 years, his wife, Johnnie; mother Aline Winbarg and husband Albert; his father Sam Jordan; two siblings, Albert Winbarg Jr. and Caroline Saunders. Left to cherish his memory are his two children; Butch Jordan and wife Margaret, Linda Liles and husband Scotty. Seven grandchildren; Ashley Otwell and husband Chuck, Mandy Smith and husband Justin, Ty Jordan and wife Stephanie, Kerri Sims and husband Eugene, Kathryn Gullette, Kristin Liles and Brittany Liles. Seven great grandchildren; Jordan and Blake Otwell, Ruby Belle and Beckett Smith, Tilly and Grady Jordan, and Ruger Doles. Jack was born July 20, 1927, and grew up on the Cane River in Natchitoches where he later worked in the family grocery store. At the end of his senior year of high school, Jack joined the U.S. Navy and missed his graduation to serve at the end of World War II. Following his discharge, Jack attended Northwestern State University where he met his wife Johnnie. The two were married May 25, 1949, and relocated to Shreveport where they began their family. Jack taught school at Greenwood Jr. High School, Midway Jr. High School and Woodlawn High School while simultaneously running the city's swimming pools. In 1952, Jack started Southside Swim Club, which operated out of the old municipal pool, Victory Natatorium until 1964 when he built Southside Swim Club and started the Southside Flying Fish team. In the late 50s, Jack founded the Shreveport Invitational Swim Meet, now known as the Damon McCoy Invitational, which is the oldest continuous swim meet in the South. In 1974, the Flying Fish, Broadmoor YMCA and Southside Swim Club merged to become COSST under Jack's direction. Jack was instrumental in forming Louisiana Swimming in the mid-70s, and served as General Chairman and Registration Chair. He also represented Louisiana Swimming at the U.S. Aquatics Convention for over 20 consecutive years. Jack continued to operate Southside Swim Club until 2007 when he retired to devote himself to the loving care of his wife, Johnnie. Jack's leadership and passion for swimming was unprecedented, and his contributions to the sport will carry his legacy forward. Most importantly, Jack was a man of strong faith and belief in God. He was a member of Kingston Rd Baptist Church where he served as a deacon until Johnnie's health issues prevented him from attending. The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Christine Washington, of Mansfield, for almost seven years of devoted loving care of Jack and Johnnie Jordan.
