Funeral services honoring Mr. Harry Hines will be held on Saturday, May 30th, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Arcadia. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Harry was born in Friendship, LA, on February 11, 1938, to Dewitt and Lois Mooney Hines, and never strayed far from it, even when he lived thousands of miles away. He passed away on May 21, 2026, with his loving family by his side.
After graduating from Louisiana Tech, Harry moved to Vivian, LA, to teach English at North Caddo High School. He met his future wife, Billie Magouirk, at a bowling alley there; after a brief courtship, they married. While still a newlywed, he was drafted into the Army; wife in tow, he was sent to Puerto Rico to teach English to the local recruits. Living in an alien culture broadened their outlooks and gave them a lifetime of stories to tell.
As a lifelong learner, he cultivated a wide range of hobbies: astronomy, winemaking, collecting classic folk recordings, and learning to play them himself on the guitar, photography, and genealogy. Harry retired after 20 years of teaching and returned to live in Friendship, building a home not far from his parent's farm. When his wife's health began to decline, they broke up housekeeping and moved in with their son Mark, in Huntsville, AL.
He authored or co-authored two family histories and a book of recollections from his childhood. He enjoyed Bible study and taught Sunday School at Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Harry is preceded in death by his wife, Billie M. Hines, parents, Dewitt and Lois Hines, brothers; Derwood Hines, Laurice (Ed) Hines, Bobby (Bob) Hines, and Walter (Buddy) Hines, and by sister Polly Hall.
Left to cherish his memories is his son, Mark Hines, daughter, Betsey Hines Riggins, sister, Dorothy Hines Killen, grandchildren Benjamin Riggins and Spencer Riggins, and by numerous other nieces, nephews, and other loving family and friends.
