Gordon Leon Singleton

Gordon Leon Singleton, 74, passed away on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Gordon was born to Harriet Gordon Singleton and Hampton Leon Singleton on April 14, 1947 in Dallas, Texas. When Gordon was around 12 years old, his father's Naval career took the family to Coronado Island, off the coast of California. It was while there that Gordon learned to sail. Sailing became his lifelong passion. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a bachelors degree in communication and fine arts. After graduation, he went to work for an advertising agency in Dallas. A few years later, he started his own agency, The Singleton Agency. Later, he moved the business to Las Vegas. While there, the agency opened satellite offices in London, England, Kuwait City, Kuwait, Johannesburg, South Africa and Mexico City, Mexico. When he was in his 30's he sailed alone from San Diego to Hawaii. During the trip, a pod of whales circled his boat and stayed with him for three days. He later would describe it as the most exciting and terrifying experience he ever had. During his advertising career, Gordon won many advertising awards. He was most proud of two Clios, an award that is judged by an international panel of advertising professionals that recognizes innovation and creative excellence in advertising, design and communications. In 2002, he met Valerie Taylor and moved to Shreveport, Louisiana. He often called this move the "mountain coming to Mohammad". They were fortunate to be able to spend 18 years together. He is survived by Valerie Taylor; her four children; her four grandchildren, who he loved as his own and with whom he spent countless hours playing cards and putting together Lego sets. He is also survived by his brother, Harry Singleton. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and his only child, Grahame Singleton. A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 30, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Chianti's Restaurant, 6535 Line Ave., Shreveport, Louisiana. The family suggests memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
