George Morris Sorrell

George M. Sorrell (Sonny), age 90, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Sonny lived a life defined by service, family, hard work, laughter, and love.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Elizabeth Sorrell and George Boone Sorrell; his first wife, Derrell Witteborg Sorrell; his brother, Hubert Simpson; his sister, Louise Rose; his son, George M. Sorrell Jr.; and his grandsons, Jason Porter and Phillip Boone Sorrell.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary George Sorrell; his children, Diana Porter and her husband Mike Porter, Grant Sorrell, Georgia Ransone, David Nugent, and Carl Nugent; his grandchildren, Marcy Sorrell, Ashley Reiff, Luc Sorrell, and Landry Sorrell, John Nugent and Josh Nugent; his great-grandchildren, Adam Porter, Nathan Porter, Presley Burnham, Jackson Porter, Saylor Porter, Stella Reiff, Hunter Reed, Leah Reed, and Carlie Bowen; and his great-great-grandchild, Tripp Porter.

After the passing of his first wife, Sonny was reunited with his high school sweetheart, Mary George. The two married and shared a beautiful chapter of life together filled with love, companionship, laughter, and deep devotion to one another. Their years together were truly special, and Sonny cherished the life they built side by side during these last several years.

Sonny devoted much of his life to serving others. He served his community as a Justice of the Peace in Shreveport, Louisiana, while also building a long and successful career at Texas Eastern. Through dedication, grit, charm, and a strong work ethic, his time there took him from coffee boy to running the Data Processing Department. After retiring from Texas Eastern, Sonny continued giving back as a school bus driver in Center, Texas, and later served his community as Constable in Greenwood, Louisiana. He was also a faithful member of Emanuel Baptist Church, where his faith and commitment to others were an important part of his life.

Farm life was at the heart of Sonny’s world, and he took great pride in raising his children and grandchildren around horses, cows, and a wide range of agricultural activities that taught hard work, responsibility, and how to have fun along the way. He loved supporting his family through 4-H programs, horse competitions, team penning, and show cow events, forming many lasting friendships in the process. Beyond the farm, Sonny also had a lifelong love of softball and enjoyed sharing stories from his playing days, along with memories from years spent supporting youth activities, a pastime he continued to enjoy well into his later years.

Most of all, Sonny will be remembered for who he was as a person. He was charismatic, a true jokester, and someone who never lost his childlike sense of fun. He loved with his whole heart and found his greatest joy in time spent with his family and friends. Sonny was a pillar of the community, always willing to lend a hand or offer support when it was needed. He was also always on the hunt for a “good deal,” a habit that frequently resulted in unexpected farm animals being brought home and some very creative explanations being delivered to his family, usually with a smile and a laugh.

Funeral services for Sonny will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana. Burial will follow at Forest Park West Cemetery in Shreveport. A visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Sonny’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.
