Funeral services for Galen Wayne Vercher, 73, will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana. A visitation will be held Saturday, September 4, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Officiating the service will be Brother David Keeny and Michael Sammons.
Galen was born on October 22, 1947 to Lee N. Vercher and Frances Vercher in Natchitoches, Louisiana and passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021 in Shreveport.
Galen was a resident of Shreveport and a firefighter for the City of Shreveport for 30+ years. Ten of those years were spent as Captain. He was a member of Local 514 from 1972-2000. He loved his job as a firefighter and his firefighter family. He also served in the United States Army where he received the Army Commendation Medal Section I and Section II. He served in the Weapons Squad 3
rd Platoon, Company B, 1
st Battalion, 22
nd Infantry, 4
th Infantry Division, and was a sharpshooter rifleman among many other details. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved his family first and foremost. His dog, Pedro, was his buddy. He also enjoyed the sport of hunting, particularly squirrel hunting. Galen was a founding member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church. Everyone knew they could find him ready for worship on the front pew every Sunday. He was a dedicated and loyal servant to his Lord and Savior and is now rejoicing in his presence.
Galen is preceded in death by his parents. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Ruby Vercher; sons, Darien Vercher, Mark Vercher and wife, Julie; grandchildren, Sabrina Tolar, Victoria Vercher, Joshua Vercher, Cameron Vercher and Adalynn Vercher; sisters, Sandra Gilcrease and husband, Bruce and Karen Sammons and husband, Michael; and a host of nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own children.
Honoring Galen as pallbearers will be Louis Traylor, Bubba Beckwith, Bubba Frey, Wilbert Saucier, Wayne Terrell, Rodney Greening, Tommy Mitchwich and Lee Wise. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Shreveport Fire Department.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We can rejoice in the fact he lived a wonderful life and served his country, family and community with the utmost integrity.
