Gaines was born on June 6, 1932 in Philadelphia, Mississippi to McKinley Carr and Annie Hood Carr. He went to join his Heavenly Father on Friday, November 5, 2021 in Bossier City, Louisiana.
Gaines proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force for eight years. He was honorably discharged after being stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. It was there he met his wife of 62 years, Billie Carr. They married in 1960 and raised two sons in the Shreveport, Louisiana area. Employing his prodigious work ethic, he served his community in the road construction industry for many years. He advanced to become a crew supervisor, where he was well-respected and highly admired by everyone who worked with him. Gaines retired in Bossier City, Louisiana where he spent the rest of his life pouring into his family and friends, gardening, serving his church, and brightening the lives of everyone he knew.
Pop Carr never met a stranger and was always described as "a good man". He had a special way of making everyone feel like a friend. He truly valued people and always saw the best in everyone. He adored his wife and family and was actively involved in the lives of his great-grandchildren. He never put himself first, and, even in his final days, wanted to make sure his wife was taken care of. Pop Carr left a legacy of love and kindness that will be remembered for generations to come. He is loved and will be greatly missed by many.
Gaines is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Juanita Crawford, Billie Tingle and Bobbie Dickenson; and brothers, Jimmy Macks Carr and Clayton Carr. He is survived by his wife, Billie Carr; sons, Terry Carr, Mitchell Carr, and wife, Kimberly; granddaughter, Alecia Fohl and husband, Byron; sister, Ruby Joy Lee and seven great-grandchildren.
