Elvin was born on August 7, 1929, in Dalton, Georgia to the late Dennis Rollins Houston and Ruby Scott Houston and was the oldest of six children. He graduated from Dalton High School in 1946 and attended boot camp at MCRD Parris Island in the 2nd Recruit Battalion of the United States Marine Corp. He finished his career as a Staff Sergeant and served as a military aircraft engine mechanic with the First Marine Airwing. He was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Ribbon, and the National Defense Service Medal.

After his service, Elvin worked throughout west Texas in the oilfield before returning to Dalton to work for the USPS. He married his beloved wife, Rebecca “Becky” Houston on June 8, 1959, before they moved back to Texas and welcomed their three children. Elvin earned his petroleum engineering degree from Texas Tech University in 1966 and worked for Pennzoil for twenty-nine years, retiring as their Superintendent of Drilling Operations. He retired in Shreveport, Louisiana where he and Becky were active members of the Christ United Methodist Church.

Elvin was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 56 years, Becky Houston; sister, Vivian Houston, and brother, Neil Houston (Sara). He is survived by his brothers, Travis Houston (Marion) and Ron Houston (Pam); sister, Sandra Lowe (Everette); three children, Morton Edward Houston (Ruth Ann), Monica Houston Bell (Dennis) and Mitchell Bates Houston (Teresa); seven grandchildren, Dena Bell Guthrie (Philip), Justin Riley Bell, Bates Bell, Meredith Houston Deacon (Wayne), Seth Houston (Julienne), Trace Houston, and Jake Houston; five great-grandchildren, Vance Guthrie, Summer Guthrie, Carter Bell, Riley Bell, and Jace Houston; along with many nieces and nephews.

Elvin was best described as a quiet man with a unique dry wit sense of humor. He seldom referred to people by their given name and preferred to use clever nicknames that often stuck with them for life.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Wen Lui, Dr. Jimmy Smith, Dr. Kathleen Majors, the Montclair Park Staff, Gentiva Hospice, and the many caregivers for their devoted care.
