Edward Martin Hannon

A graveside service for Edward Martin Hannon, 77, will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Keithville, Louisiana.

Edward Martin Hannon, affectionately known by many names, Entha, Yoda, and Papa Ed, was born on May 29, 1948, to Edward Walter Hannon, Sr., and Harriet Marie Gibbons Hannon in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and passed away on Friday, August 15, 2025, in Doyline, Louisiana.

His nickname Entha was lovingly given to him by his mother and siblings because, as a child and teenager, he was always into everything. He had a knack for taking things apart to see how they worked and somehow putting them back together, with a few extra parts left over. Yoda was a name given to him by his daughter Tammy when she was young, thanks to his large, fuzzy ears. She would sit behind him while he drove, holding onto his ears and turning them with every turn of the wheel. When she was sleepy, she’d curl up on his lap and rub one of his ears until she drifted off. Papa Ed was the name the rest of the family lovingly called him.

Edward, also known as Eddie to many, was baptized, christened, and completed his First Holy Communion in the Catholic faith. After graduating from Scranton Technical High School in 1966, he joined the United States Air Force (1967–1969), serving at Vandenberg AFB, California, in the Civil Engineering Squadron under SAC, the major command responsible for managing the U.S. strategic nuclear strike forces. He attained the rank of Sergeant.

On August 4, 1969, Edward returned to Scranton on a hardship assignment following the passing of his father. It was then that he met Margaret Ann Sharpe, and they were united in marriage on November 29, 1969. Together they had two children: Tammy Ann Hannon (born September 26, 1970) and Edward Donald Hannon (born November 22, 1972).

Edward re-enlisted in the United States Navy on May 14, 1975, completing training in Great Lakes, IL. He was stationed in Charleston, SC (1975–1981), then transferred to New London, CT, residing in Groton (1981–1985). During this time, he joined the Southeastern CT Judo Association with his children, forming part of the US Sub Base Judo Club. In July 1985, he was transferred to Philadelphia, PA, where he continued his passion for judo with the Navy’s team, Eye of the Tiger. He earned a senior brown belt and competed in several state championships, placing second and third. He retired from judo in January 1989 due to health issues.

His final station was Newport, RI (1988–1993), where he retired from the Navy on October 1, 1993, as an Electrician’s Mate Petty Officer First Class (EMI, PO1, E-6). Throughout his service, he received numerous honors, including Sailor of the Month, the Good Conduct Medal (Fourth Award), the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation with two Bronze Stars.

Edward’s passions included working in his church, helping anyone in need, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures, such as ice cream, sweets, checkers, baseball (a devoted New York Yankees fan), football (cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles), judo, bowling, diving, swimming, and spending time with his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was deeply committed to always doing the right thing.

He and Margaret moved back to Carbondale, PA, to be closer to family, where they lived until her passing on February 13, 2012. Edward later remarried Mary J. Schermerhorn on June 27, 2015, and remained in Carbondale until her passing on February 10, 2024. He then moved to Doyline, LA, to live with his daughter Tammy and son-in-law Chris, where he spent his final days.

Edward Martin Hannon leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Edward was preceded in death by his loving parents, Edward and Harriet Hannon; his wife of 42 years, Margaret A. Sharpe Hannon; son, Edward D. Hannon; sister, Elaine M. Hannon Gallagher; second wife of 8 years, Mary J. Schermerhorn Hannon, and his brother, Patrick J. Hannon.

He is survived by his devoted and loving daughter, Tammy A. Hannon Fuller, and husband, Christal J. Fuller of Doyline, LA; brother, William Hannon and wife, Patricia of PA; daughter-in-law, Carolann Collins of PA; sister-in-law, Sarah Hannon of PA; son-in-law, Edward D. Fuller of Dallas, TX; brother-in-law, Donald Sharpe of PA; sister-in-law, Michelle (Missy) Sharpe Morgan of PA; cousin and best friend, Jack Hannon and wife Donna of PA; cousin, friend and caregiver, Sandra K. Fuller Martin and husband Kelvin of Doyline, LA; grandson, Robert A. Lettsome of Delhi, LA; granddaughter, Keisha R. Fuller of Dallas, Tx; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Three bonus daughters from his blended family and grandchildren, Jill Linko and husband, Greg of PA, Laura Knapp and husband, Gary of PA, and Amy Schermerhorn of PA.

Honoring Edward as pallbearers will be the United States Military, Phillip Edwards, and Joshua Fuller.

Last but certainly not least, we would like to give a huge thank you and credit to Misty Rendon and the staff of Rose-neath Funeral Home. She was absolutely amazing by showing true heartfelt compassion, honesty, with sound advice, guidance, and patience.
